From empty store shelves to people visiting their elderly family members through glass windows, we are living history. Now, librarians are looking to document it.“I think the pandemic affects all of us, but how people are experiencing that really varies so much from region to region, town to town, state to state," said Anna Neatrour, Digital Initiatives Librarian with the University of Utah. Neatrour’s colleague, Jeremy Myntti, Head of Digital Library Services, says this an unprecedented time for most of us, but some have lived through similar experiences.“If you think back to World War II or even during the 1918 flu pandemic, what people were going through is pretty similar to what we're going through now."Over the last two months, the University of Utah has collected mostly photographs but also letters and oral history videos, documenting how the coronavirus pandemic affected us all in 2020. Many of the early submissions included photos of empty grocery store shelves and people social distancing in each other's front yards."People try to visit their elderly family members and in adult care facilities and not being able to do that and having to visit them through windows," said Rachel Wittmann, Digital Curation Librarian.History students at the University of Utah are also helping the librarians document this time. More than 600 items have already been collected. "So, once we have items submitted to us, they’re processed, they’re put into an online digital collection where anyone in the world can access to them," said Myntti.University of Utah isn't the only one working to preserve this historical perspective. Four different crashes happened during fallen soldier Cpl. Thomas Walker's processional in Ohio, according to Cleveland Police Patrolman Association member Charlie McGeever. At least one of the crashes was critical. From flooding to tornadoes, a deadly storm system blew through parts of the country over the weekend.At least eight people are dead, including three children, after severe weather slammed the south.Lily Pierce survived a tornado in Mississippi, after she took cover for three hours inside a storm shelter.“All the sudden, you’re crashing on the floor crying, praying it’s not you,” Pierce told TV station WBMA.At least 18 tornadoes hit four states. Two children died, when a tree fell on their car during a tornado outbreak in Texas.“You can't imagine that happening. I would never think of that, you know, a tree hitting a car while you're going down the road, so it was very upsetting,” said neighbor Joe Spangler.The children’s mother ran to Spangler’s house. begging for help.“She was like 'help me, help me,' so I pulled her in the house, and I saw down the road that her husband was down there, so I ran down there to see what was going on,” Spangler told TV stations KTRE. “When I got down there, I mean, I saw the size of the tree and how it was on the car. Four people, including the UPS driver, are dead after a police chase involving a stolen package delivery truck ended in a shooting Thursday night.According to the FBI, the incident started when two armed suspects robbed the Regency Jewelers in Coral Gables at about 4:15 p.m. As the suspects ran from the scene, they hijacked a UPS truck and kidnapped the driver, prompting a chase.When the truck eventually stopped, both the suspects and law enforcement exchanged shots. The shooting killed both suspects, the UPS driver and an innocent bystander at the scene.Federal agents say it is too early to tell how the driver and the bystander were fatally shot.The innocent bystander was shot and killed at the location where the chase ended, according to federal agents. That's right, you can now get a degree in brewing.With craft beer now a multi-billion dollar industry, we're learning more students are now studying the science of suds. Among those students is Chris Thibodeau, who recently graduated from Metropolitan State University in Denver, with a degree in brewery operations.“For the love of beer," says Thibodeau of the reason he decided on this major. Thibodeau says he's drawn to the process of making beer, as well as the beer community.A retired United States Air Force veteran, Thibodeau has turned his love of beer into a second career. He says that the brewery program is just as difficult as military life.“It's not just drinking beer and having a party,” he said. “It’s hard work but it's rewarding in the end.”As the craft beer industry continues to grow, there's now a growing number of colleges across the country offering what you could call "brewology" degrees.“Honestly, you get an incredible grounding in every aspect of what it takes to operate a brewery, what it means to make beer, what it takes to sell beer,” said Ethan Tsai, an MSU Denver beer industry program instructor. Tsai says brewing is a science. He also makes the curriculum sound like more of a headache than a hangover.“The microbiology that you need to know or understand to brew beer, the chemistry involved in that, its fairly extensive,” Tsai said. Four years of studying mathematical equations and malting barley has paid dividends for Thibodeau, as he recently received his degree during a special veteran’s graduation ceremony at the MSU Denver campus. He also accepted a part-time position at Tivoli Brewing Company in Denver.“This brewery program has been amazing,” he said. “Just the insight to all the different aspects of brewing and preparing us for any situation we might encounter in a brewery.”More veterans seem to share Thibodeau's passion for studying brewing science.
