(KGTV) -- South Bay junior and senior high school families learned Monday they will need to stand fast at home a little longer after district officials said they will not reopen campuses for physical learning this year.The Sweetwater Union High School District announced that students will continue distance learning through December 2020 citing "significantly higher" COVID-19 cases within the district's communities.The announcement comes as local health officials wait to hear if the state will place San Diego County back into the purple tier -- the most restrictive level on California's coronavirus reopening road map. Such a move would likely shutter indoor operations for restaurants, movie theaters, houses of worship and gyms, limit retail businesses to just 25% capacity. Chula Vista reported 5,603 COVID-19 cases making up 12.7% of the county's total cases, according to the latest county health data. "It is with this information, and with our continued commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff, that we announce the continuation of distance learning for the remainder of the semester through December 2020," the district said in an email to families."As was outlined in our reopening plan earlier in the summer, our next checkpoint will be by November 30, 2020, to determine how we will start the second semester in January 2021," officials said.SUHSD is the first school district to commit to closing its campuses through the remainder of the year.The district kicked off its school year online on Aug. 3, the first district in the county to start the fall semester.Under the distance learning model, students are attending three virtual classes per day with 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with each teacher. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

(KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

(KGTV) — A Chula Vista neighborhood is on alert after an encounter between three young boys and two men in an SUV.Aydyn Mays, 8, and his brother Jaycob, 7, were skateboarding with a friend along Glendora Drive Tuesday afternoon when they say a dark-colored SUV drove up with two men inside."They were about 30 years of age and one was wearing a bright safety vest," said Wendy Mays, the boys' mother.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodAydyn says the men asked them if they wanted an extra skateboard."They said, 'I have the same skateboard, but way much faster...Just get in the car, and I can take you to my house and I can show you the skateboard," said Aydyn.Aydyn says the men asked each of the boys and all said "No," but the men kept asking and insisting."It seemed like they wanted me to go inside the car," said Aydyn."They were trying to lie to us and steal us. I was scared," said Jaycob.Eventually, the boys ran off and straight to their homes and their moms."The boys came running into the home ... and said, 'Somebody tried to kidnap us!'" said Wendy Mays.Mays says soon after, the mom of the other boy was at her door."It was terrifying. Just made my heart fall into the pit of my stomach," said Mays.The boys' stories matched. Police were called, leading to a search, but the SUV was not found."I'm very proud of the boys getting away and coming to us. The National Christmas Tree Association says there was an “unprecedented level” of early inquiries from customers wanting to know when tree farms would open this fall.Christmas tree sellers from New York to California are selling out fast because of the high demand and fewer trees to sell.The issue is impacting would-be Christmas tree shoppers in Canada, too.The Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association says following the 2008 recession, Christmas tree farmers in North America didn’t plant as many trees as usual and didn’t move ahead with planned expansions until later.Since it takes 6-10 years for a tree to grow and be ready for ornaments and lights, some of those post-2008 decisions are still impacting supply.The National Christmas Tree Association has reported a smaller supply of harvestable trees since 2015 because of fewer trees being planted.Drought conditions and several years of intense wildfires in the western U.S. and Canada as well as the mid-Atlantic states have also taken a toll on Christmas tree farms, destroying their trees or limiting growth opportunities.The surge in coronavirus cases is also limiting the availability of Christmas trees around the country, as some suppliers and sellers are making the difficult decision to close or reduce hours and capacity to keep staff and shoppers safe.For those with a National forest nearby, the U.S. Forest Service allows people to cut down a tree from their lands with a few conditions.
