Stores across the country are starting to advertise and display back-to-school sales. From electronics to clothes, the National Retail Federation is tracking buying trends as the new school year approaches."Parents may not know how their children are attending classes, whether it’s in-person or online, a mix, and that is certainly reflected in how people are shopping right now. So, when we did our study in early July most consumers did not know what they needed to buy yet," said Katherine Cullen, the Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation. She says there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming school year and most consumers are hesitant to buy back to school supplies right now, but many already have plans to spend more."For grade school and high school shoppers it is over 0 on average which is about 0 more than last year. So, some of that is definitely being driven by this current environment and it's shaping how people are planning to buy right now," said Cullen. Cullen says consumers will likely spend more than last year on school supplies and just as much on new clothes. She said there are some things kids need no matter where they learn. "Kids keep growing even if they're not going to school in person, they will likely still need some new items."But the big ticket items families will be spending money on is electronics. "We are certainly seeing that many families, over half, are expecting there will be at least some online learning component and as a result they're planning to make some extra purchases around that: laptops, computers, head phones and speakers are a big component of that," said Cullen.The National Retail Federation says grade school and high school shoppers plan to spend more on average on electronics. Amy Cunningham, a parent in South Carolina, says her family decided to purchase two laptops to help their children with online remote learning this fall. This past spring, the children shared their parents' computers. "Having to juggle the kids’ distance learning with what we were doing was hard so we knew if we were going to do it this year, which was our plan, that we were going to need to get additional laptops," said Cunningham. Cunningham says she likely won't need many other school supplies and doesn't anticipate needing to buy new clothes for the school year."I’d probably get notebooks and stuff like that just because we don’t have a lot of that sitting around. Clothes, no. They live in their play clothes at home now so there’s no point really," says Cunningham.As for how parents will be back-to-school shopping this year, for many, gone are the days of traditional in-store browsing. SUNSET CLIFFS, Calif., (KGTV) - There are mounting concerns about the stability of the some of the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs. The City of San Diego was tipped off about the cliff collapse near Hill Street last week. City crews surveyed the collapse then cordoned it off with yellow caution tape to discourage people from getting to close to the section in question. The city says the collapses are likely from rain. “There is a big crack there right up against the edge where it looks like that’s the next piece that’s going to fall,” said photographer Jim Grant, “it’s a good thing that somebody came in and put some protection up.” Grant spends nearly everyday photographing the cliffs and says he has seen his fair share of people getting too close. “They don’t realize that one slip and when you fall 60 or 70 feet, it leaves a permanent mark that’s for sure,” added Grant. Officials urge people to avoid the section that has collapsed and to always use caution when traversing through Sunset Cliffs. The city says it will have its engineers evaluate the section after this weekend’s weather before determining what steps to take next. 1145

The battle over the sale of the Confederate flag at the Lorain County Fair reached yet another peak after a vandal posted a Confederate flag on a billboard protesting its sale.The billboard is one of three purchased by the Fair Minded Coalition of Lorain County which urges residents to "say no" to the sale of the Confederate flag at the fair. Coalition member Jeanine Donaldson said she believes someone posting the flag on a coalition billboard is further proof of how it divides a community."To my family and other African-Americans it symbolizes hate, torture and terror," Donaldson said. "It's a right and wrong situation in the year 2018.""No less than Governor John Kasich was the one who recommended that the flag come down for the state fair, and he did it because it was the right thing to do," she saidLorain City Councilman Angel Arroyo said the Lorain County Fair Board needs to finally ban the sale of the Confederate flag because it doesn't represent Ohio or his community."It's a sign of ignorance and hatred of people in our community," Arroyo said."It's frustrating putting this flag on the billboard.  It's a sign of disrespect and truly shows the true colors of racism and hatred."But Lorain County Fair Board President Kim Meyers says the Confederate flag has been sold at the fair for 30 years. Currently, it's being sold by one vendor who is selling the flag as part of a wide variety of Civil War memorabilia.Meyers said to restrict the sale of the flag would be a violation of First Amendment rights."Here at the fair, probably 99 percent of the feedback that we received has been in favor of the fair allowing for the sale," Meyers said."The Ohio Fair Managers conference back in 2016 voted unanimously, there were 88 counties and seven independent fairs, that voted to allow the sale of that."Still, Donaldson said her group will continue to protest, and said more efforts to stop the sale of the Confederate flag at the fair will be unveiled in the coming months."We're not going away," Donaldson said."This is not about politics, it's just the right thing to do."    2159
