BOSTONIA (CNS) - A shooting at a marijuana dispensary near El Cajon left one person wounded Friday.The gunfire in the 1600 block of North Second Street in the unincorporated Bostonia community was reported shortly after 12 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.Following the shooting, the victim, believed to be about 16 years old, was driven out of the area and dropped off at a gas station about a mile to the south, Lt. Pat McEvoy said.Paramedics took the wounded youth, whose exact age and gender were not immediately available, to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of wounds of undisclosed severity.Deputies took several people into custody at the dispensary for questioning and searched the area for the shooter by ground and aboard a patrol helicopter, McEvoy said. BRUSSELS (AP) — European lawmakers say that plant-based products that do not contain meat can continue to be labeled “sausages” or “burgers.” The EU parliament on Friday rejected proposals backed by meat industry lobbyists that could have led to a ban on the terms. The decision means veggie burgers, soy steaks and vegan sausages can continue to be sold as such in restaurants and shops. Europe’s largest farmers' association wanted to ban the terms, arguing that labelling vegetarian substitutes with words that bring meat to mind was misleading consumers. BOSTON, Massachusetts — Just a few years ago, Michael Farid was a mechanical engineering student, trying to build a powered skateboard that could be controlled with body weight, similar to a Segway.But that didn’t pan out.As Farid recalls, he and his three business partners—all MIT grads—dabbled with various ideas (and even some prototypes) before they said to themselves, “Hey, let’s build a robot that can cook food!”“It started more as an engineering project,” Farid said. “Then over the course of time we evaluated what business model might work for this and what might not work for this. Basically we decided that starting a restaurant was the best way to derive as much value as we could from it.”Thus Spyce was born.“We were in school. We had a hard time finding a healthy delicious meal for anything cheaper than say or , and we were studying robotics…so naturally this is what we came up with.”Situated in the heart of downtown Boston, Spyce is turning heads; lunch rush customers have lined up out the door. The main attraction is its seven rotating robotic woks, heated via induction, that cook meals all on their own.Farid, Spyce’s co-founder and CEO, knows customers may come in for the novelty, but he hopes they stay for the cuisine.The menu consists of various types of international cuisine; some of the menu items include the “Thai Bowl,” the “Latin Bowl” and an “Indian bowl.”Executive chef Sam Benson — under the guidance of world renowned chef with several Michelin stars to his name Daniel Boulud — worked to create a menu that reminded him of his upbringing in New York.“Every cuisine you can imagine is there in New York City,” Benson said. “That’s something I wanted.”As to the difficulties a chef is faced with when asking a robot to do his or her work?“It was a challenge,” Benson said. “[For example,] dispensing kale so it was perfect…making sure the ingredients were handled correctly. We are working with a tool and technology that hasn’t been invented yet. So it’s like ‘OK, here’s the chef, here’s the Spyce robotic kitchen, let's merge these two, hospitality and technology.”Customers order at a kiosk, and almost immediately they’ll see their name appear on a digital monitor positioned above the robotic wok that will start cooking their order.Ingredients are stored in refrigerated bins behind the woks, and a device they call a “runner” moves back and forth collecting various grains, vegetables and sauces to dispense. The menu offers items with chicken, but they say that “for food safety reasons” their chicken is pre-cooked at a commissary off site. Meals take roughly 2-and-a-half minutes to cook, and once finished the robotic wok tips over—by itself, of course—and pours the finished entrée into a bowl. The only time a human interacts with the food is when an employee adds any garnishes that a customer has selected. That person then puts a lid on the bowl and affixes a pre-printed sticker with the customer’s name.Farid acknowledges the fact that a restaurant concept like this does employ fewer people, but he says it’s a trade-off for efficiency and quality food that costs less. But behind the attractions and the flashing lights, families struggle to get by.“It’s a company town, and the company is tourism,” said Kevin Huddleston of Christian Action Ministries. “Everyone works for tourism in some way. They’re not really jobs that people can raise a family on, but that’s what people are trying to do.” Huddleston runs a food bank that helps many of Branson’s families, especially through the winter months when many attractions are closed and most tourists are gone.“Our unemployment spikes to 20%,” said Bryan Stallings of the lack of jobs during the off-season in Branson. Stallings helps run the non-profit Elevate Branson, which helps families get jobs and services they need.The tourists usually come back with the warmer weather, but this year, COVID-19 came instead, skyrocketing hunger higher than ever before.“Just at the time when people were getting their callbacks to work or expecting to get their callbacks to work, they got their layoff notices this year,” said Huddleston. “So it was a double whammy.”Huddleston said his group normally serves food to about 4,000 families per month, but during the pandemic, they’ve seen more than 5,000 and 6,000 families per month. “The demand for service was unprecedented,” he said. “It was so high we had never seen the numbers we were seeing.”Aaron Taylor has visited Christian Action Ministries several times for assistance. He said standing in line is a painful reminder of his reality.“The coronavirus has completely destroyed what I came to Branson for,” said Taylor. “I came to Branson to get sober.” Taylor worked with a local hotel chain doing construction, hoping he could start a new chapter.“The day that coronavirus hit, I was laid off,” he said. “After losing my job, became homeless, lost the kids to state custody because I wasn’t able to take care of them. My kids deserve better than that.” He said places like the food bank have kept his family afloat, but now, he said he feels like he’s drowning.“It’s taken me a depression level and a shame level where I’m no longer sober, and I, for the last month, I haven’t even had the desire to be sober,” said Taylor.His struggle is not the only pain in the parking lot.“It’s gotten hard on us because there’s not a lot of income coming into the household,” said Jonathan Wayne Robinette Sr. who lives in Branson and works at a local hotel.“We have no public transpiration, we are 1,300 units short of having affordable housing, and we’re seasonal low-wage jobs because it’s based on seasonal jobs and tourism so it kind of creates this perfect storm of poverty,” said Stallings.For some, there is hope. “God willing, it gets better,” said Robinette Sr. “We just take it one day at a time.” Yet, for many in the tourist town, this pandemic has shown no mercy. “I don’t necessarily understand communities like Branson,” said Taylor. “It’s probably time for me to leave.” 3056
