NANJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A powerful explosion at a factory in eastern China's Nanjing City Wednesday has left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured, including 14 critically, the city government said.Officials of the government of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, told a press conference Wednesday evening that 10 people were killed and 14 others suffered serious injuries after the blast at 10:11 a.m. ripped through an abandoned plastics factory in northern Nanjing's Xixia District.Further, more than 120 people have been hospitalized, according to the official.The death toll, which is based on the number of bodies so far recovered, could climb as rescuers are still clearing the explosion site and some injured people are reported to be in very critical condition.The blast was caused by a gas leak after a propylene pipeline was damaged as workers dismantled factory buildings of the Nanjing No. 4 Plastics Factory, said a statement from the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS).The rescue headquarters say an excavator owned by Yangzhou Hongyuan Construction and Development Co., Ltd. hit a a pipe of 159 mm in diameter.The gas leak started at 9:56 a.m. and explosion occurred at 10:11 a.m.Gas supply was cut off a minute later, said Liu Zhaohua, deputy head of Nanjin's work safety bureau.The excavator operator, whose identity was not revealed, has been held by police for investigation.The explosion occurred when a motorist started a car engine at the scene, igniting the leaking gas, the SAWS statement said, without saying if the motorist was among the victims.Some rescuers and repairmen who had come to handle the gas leak may have died in the explosion, the headquarters said.

XI'AN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two floods and other rain-triggered disasters that hit northwest China's Shaanxi Province in the past 11 days had left at least 111 dead and 167 missing, provincial authorities said Sunday.The first floods, from the rain-swollen Hanjiang River and its tributaries, hit Shaanxi's Ankang, Hanzhong, and Shangluo cities from July 14 to 19. Another flood that began Thursday worsened the catastrophe.The floods have affected about 4.25 million people and forced 703,000 people to be evacuated. In the worst-hit Ankang City, 63 people were killed, 119 missing and 2,824 injured, according to a statement from the provincial government.The floods also caused an estimated economic loss of 9.56 billion yuan. Officials noted that more than 71,000 people were mobilized to assist in the flood control.

"It is better to hear the people's blames than their cries."Xu also ordered local offcials to strengthen monitoring efforts by using advanced technologies and mobilizing the public.China has been suffering from a string of rain-triggered disasters recently as the country battles its worst floods in more than a decade.Yunnan is the latest to be hit by massive mudslides.As of Sunday, 29 people were killed and 63 remained missing after mudslides hit the remote, mountainous town of Gongshan in the province on Wednesday.In the northwestern province of Gansu, at least 1,435 people were killed and another 330 are reported missing after an avalanche of mud and rocks hit the center town of Zhouqu County at mid-night Aug. 7.Rain-triggered mudslides also killed more than 18 people in Wenchuan and Qingchuan counties in southwest China's Sichuan - which was devastated by a massive earthquake in 2008.
