The millions of people who were unemployed this year may want to start planning now for tax season. Unemployment income is taxable. If you didn't already choose to have those taxes taken out, a CPA tells us there are other options. You could get ahead of it and make an estimated tax payment for the fourth quarter. The drop in income may also mean you're eligible for other deductions and credits, like the earned income tax credit or the child and dependent care credit.“That's an income-based one that's based on a sliding scale, depending on how much you make. So, if you made less money, you could see more of that,” said Lisa Greene-Lewis, CPA and tax expert at TurboTax.Questions on stimulus payments will also be part of your tax return. That money is not taxable. If you got too much, you do not have to pay it back. But if you didn't get the amount that you're eligible for, you can get it as a recovery tax rebate. While working from home, some people stayed in other states. That could potentially put you on the hook for two state tax returns, depending on how long you stayed there.Because of the 2017 tax law, deductions for working from home will mostly only apply to those who are self-employed.Self-employed workers could also be eligible for new credits. You can claim them when you file or estimate those credits and keep them in your pocket now.“If you were sick or you took care of someone that was sick or took care of a family member, there's a qualified sick and family leave credit, and they can be worth thousands of dollars,” said Greene-Lewis.The IRS hasn't said when the tax filing season will open, but it's usually in early January. 1667

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a two-week extension for a government funding deadline in an effort to avert a partial government shutdown this week but setting the stage for a partial one on December 21.The stop-gap measure, which the Senate is also expected to pass, pushes the deadline for when funding will expire for several government agencies from December 7 to December 21 -- setting up a showdown over spending just days before Christmas.Lawmakers came together to pass the funding extension after the death of George H.W. Bush. On Capitol Hill, much of the week has been dedicated to paying tribute to the former President who was lying in state in the US Capitol rotunda for several days.Congressional leaders in both parties have indicated they do not want a partial shutdown, but Democrats and Republicans remain at an impasse over President Donald Trump's demand for billion for his long-promised border wall and the issue continues to be the key sticking point in negotiations."It's getting late. It's not five minutes to midnight yet but it's getting towards the end of the month," Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee said Wednesday.Asked how two additional weeks would help lawmakers reach an agreement over wall funding, Shelby replied, "I think you could do it in 15 minutes if you could reach some sort of resolution to it. Will they, is a good question. ... I don't know if they will."A key question now is whether the President and congressional Democratic leaders can strike a deal.Senate Republicans have floated the possibility of attempting to allocate billion over the next two years. But any spending bill would need at least some Democratic votes to pass.Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has so far said that the President should either agree to enact an existing Department of Homeland Security funding bill that has bipartisan support in the Senate and would allocate .6 billion for border security or keep DHS funded for another year via a short-term spending measure known as a continuing resolution. The President has kept up the pressure over the course of the week by reiterating his call for funding for the wall. "We would save Billions of Dollars if the Democrats would give us the votes to build the Wall. Either way, people will NOT be allowed into our Country illegally!" the President tweeted on Monday.Lawmakers passed a government spending package to fund much of the government prior to the 2018 midterm elections -- so if there is any kind of a shutdown, it would not affect all of the federal government. But that doesn't mean a partial shutdown would not be disruptive. The current funding deadline is in effect for government entities including the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department and the Interior Department. 2867

The nor'easter whipped New England with snow early Thursday, a day after it brought another round of blackouts, treacherous roads and canceled flights to the East Coast. The storm dumped snow in several states Wednesday, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It started winding down as it shifted its focus to New England overnight, where it'll linger for a day, unleashing a messy mix of rain and snow.About 19 million people, from Connecticut to Maine, remained under winter storm warnings and watches after a deadly "bomb cyclone" hit the area last week. But this storm is less severe than the previous one on March 2, which left at least six people dead. Snow and rain remain a concern, along with the aftermath of fallen trees, knocked out power lines and slippery roads. Here's what to expect: Focus is on New England 845

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Florida takes in plenty of stray cats, many of which are either lost or in need of a loving home."Let me tell you, this is why I love working here," said volunteer program coordinator Sarah Fisher. Two weeks ago, an orange tabby cat showed up at the center."He was just found on the street, he was brought in," she said. "He had fleas, he was skinny."The cat had a microchip and it turned out he'd been missing for a very long."It's amazing," said Fisher. "It's unheard of."That's when Perry Martin -- a retired Fort Pierce K9 officer -- got the call from his veterinarian's office."They said, 'Perry what would you do if we told you that T2 was alive?' And I said, 'I'd probably tell you you're crazy because he died a long long time ago!'"Martin adopted Thomas Jr., also known as T2, back in 2002."He was a stray. Just kind of showed up," he said. "Took him to the vet, gave him his shots and that's when he got his microchip."He had him for a couple of years until the cat escaped during the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne in 2004."People didn't have air conditioning, so as time went on people left their windows and screens open," he said. "I was staying in Stuart at the time and he slipped out."Martin was fearful that T2 had possibly been hit by a car on a nearby highway."I filed a report with the Humane Society, in case animal control picked him up," he said. "He had a microchip and I thought someone would just call me if they found him."But he never thought it would take 14 years for that to happen."My vet even listed him as deceased," Martin said. When Martin was reunited with T2, it was like seeing a ghost.“As soon as I looked at that face, I knew exactly who he was. A little bit older, kind of like me," he said. "I'm convinced he had to have had somebody bring him into their house. He must have been part of somebody's family and maybe he got out. I just can't see him living wild in the area I figured he would be."The Humane Society said T2's journey shows the importance of micro-chipping and keeping it updated."The microchip wasn't updated and it was an old phone number. We were able to track down the original owner," said Fisher."The national average for cats that get reunited with their owners -- is only two percent. The majority of them, they don't get microchipped. For dogs, it's 20 percent," Fisher added.Martin said he hopes others will think about microchipping their pets and updating their information ahead of hurricane season this year."Just update your information, your alternate information and your vet's information. They'll scan them and hopefully you'll get your pet back. You never know," he said.T2 is now about 18 years old and is weak, but eating well."Since he got home, he's eating, he's drinking, he's moving around," Martin said.Martin now helps train service dogs and recently added a new addition to the household with Sassy, the golden retriever. He said Sassy is gentle with T2, as he lives out the rest of his days with a new friend and an old friend."He had an opportunity to come home, spend time with his family and be on a good note when he passes," Martin said. "Until that day, he'll be spoiled like he was before he left." 3273

Now the "Queen of Tejano music" has joined a constellation of stars in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The singer simply known as Selena was honored Friday with a posthumous star in one of showbiz's most visible landmarks."While she was taken from us way too early, we now have something permanent that generation after generation can see in the most famous neighborhood anywhere in the world," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said. 515
