SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a 19-year-old was shot in Chicano Park Wednesday night. According to San Diego Police, the teen was walking with a group of men in the park just before 7 p.m. when an argument broke out and an unknown suspect pulled out a handgun. Several shots were fired at the 19-year-old, who was hit twice by the gunfire, police say. The victim ran away from the scene and was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance. He sustained non-life threatening injuries, police say. Both the victim and acquaintance were unable to provide any details about the shooting. The San Diego Police Department’s gang unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors said the officer-involved-shooting in the South Crest area of San Diego, all started with a machete attack between acquaintances. It was a frightening scene on Boston Avenue Wednesday afternoon. A man was seen lying on the street, clutching his bloody head. Neighbors said he was beaten over the head with a machete. According to San Diego Police, the first 911 call came in at around 5:15 pm.RELATED: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Southcrest10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. First responders soon took the victim to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. After the attack, witnesses said they saw the attacker run westbound on Boston Ave., then north onto 40th street. That is where a San Diego Police officer confronted him. The officer first fired a taser to try to mitigate the situation. However, the department spokesperson said the taser was deemed "ineffective." The officer then shot the attacker at least once. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Those who know the machete-wielding man said he is usually a nice person. But he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack. While they knew he had violent tendencies, no one thought it would escalate to this level.  1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma neighbors are rallying to save a beloved bike track - a track they've built with their own hands, but no permits. The track on Famosa and Nimitz Boulevards was threatened on Monday. “I rushed over here as quick as I could,” Darren Miller said.  “I stood in front of the tractor and said, “I’m sorry I can't let you keep doing this.”It’s still unclear who sent the bobcat to level the track. But - the land belongs to the San Diego Housing Commission.Miller is a parent of two boys and says he started building the track last March after coming across the empty land. He added the jumps and curves, thinking it would become a sort of secret playground.“I thought myself and a couple of other dads involved would have a small little track that or six or seven kids knew about. I had no idea that this many people loved it,” he said.Monday night several families showed up for a rally to save the park, expressing their affinity for the neighborhood track. “This is the most awesome-est place in the world,” eight-year-old Jude Hudson said, “So much fun because there are some bumps and curves.”Parents agree.“We don’t want this to go. This a good place to be and to exercise and to keep them off their phones." Jon Erb said. "You got parents that come out here on a daily basis, so you got chaperones down here and keeps them away from drugs.”When 10News asked what the deal with the empty land was, the San Diego Housing Commission sent the following statement:“An unauthorized and unpermitted makeshift bike park was set up by unknown individuals on the undeveloped property that is owned by the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) at the corner of Famosa and Nimitz Boulevard. Some of the no trespassing signs placed on the property by SDHC have been removed. Without sufficient insurance, SDHC, a public agency, cannot allow the property to be used as a bike park. The property is being planned to be developed as affordable housing.  We are pleased to be working with the Community Planning Group on the future development of affordable housing at this site.” 2143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Hillcrest say an abandoned church has become a campground for the homeless. The church sold the land to developer LMC North Park Holdings in 2018. They were still leasing it out until about a month ago. That's when residents say the homeless started moving in. "It's more or less the drug crowd, sex trafficking, stuff like that that winds up utilizing these areas," he said. The spot on Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue is boarded up, covered in graffiti, and littered with needles. On Tuesday, firefighters say transients smoking drugs started a fire at another vacant building a few blocks down. Passante says it's just a matter of time before that happens at the church. "It's the same people you see over and over and over again and most of them have some kind of mental illness," said Passante. "The quicker places like this can be demolished the less we'll have that problem.LMC North Park Holdings says they are aware of the problem and have hired 24/7 security. Our crews didn't see any security guards while out there for several hours gathering the story. They say they've been waiting on permits and have plans to start demolition by the end of the year. 1206

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family. He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk. He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife. The couple has four children, one with special needs. As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship. They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house. The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey. She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong. It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help. She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. "It really hits home that everyone really does just care and sees how much he has sacrificed for our country."Fish says many have already stepped up to help with the house but that they may still need a sliding door and fence. Those wanting to help the Stacy family can also donate to their Go Fund Me page.  1880
