Speculation regarding potential for devices to catch fire due to a firmware change is false," HP said in the statement.Tech blog "The Red Tape Chronicle" reported earlier Tuesday that researchers from Columbia University found that a feature named "remote firmware update" on HP's Internet-connected LaserJet printers could allow hackers take control of the device by installing malicious software, and even manage the printer to catch fire.In the statement, HP said that its LaserJet printers have a hardware element called "thermal breaker" that is designed to prevent a part of the device from overheating or causing a fire, noting that it cannot be overcome by a firmware change as it was reported.The Palo Alto, California-based company said that the specific vulnerability exists for some HP LaserJet printers it placed on a public Internet without a firewall. It conceded that on Apple's Mac computers and PCs running Linux system, it is possible for a specially formatted corrupt print job to trigger a firmware upgrade.The company said that it is building a firmware upgrade to mitigate the issue and suggested consumers could place printers behind a firewall and disable remote firmware upload on exposed printers.Researchers said in the earlier report that they believed the flaw is not limited to HP printers and millions of printers around the world could be vulnerable to hack attacks.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Even a slightly high blood pressure is considered dangerous to largely increase the stroke risk, a new study found.The finding was published Wednesday on the online edition of U.S. medical journal Neurology.In the study, researchers found people who have pre-hypertension, whose blood pressure measured between normal and high, are 55 percent more likely to suffer a stroke compared with normal people.The study involved data from 12 previous studies on blood pressure and stroke occurrence of some 500,000 adults.About one in three U.S. adults suffer from pre-hypertension, which is defined at a systolic blood pressure between 120 and 139 or a diastolic blood pressure between 80 and 89, according to the U.S. Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure."People who do fall into the higher range of pre-hypertension should modify their lifestyle as much as possible," suggested Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele, director of the Olive View-UCLA Stroke Program and leading author of the study.Stroke is the number three cause of death, killing more than 130,000 in the U.S. a year, according to a CBS report.

They accused the company of using its dominant search engine to promote its own social networking site by giving Google+ pages and profiles an artificially prominent position in search results.The search giant first had a public bickering with Twitter which issued a statement on Tuesday saying that "As we've seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter. We're concerned that as a result of Google's changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone."Google on Wednesday made a statement on its official Google+ page, saying that "We're a bit surprised by Twitter's comments because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer." BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China restored 23,000 hectares of wetlands in 2011, according to the latest figures from the State Forestry Administration (SFA).An SFA spokesman said China reinforced wetland protection in 2011 by increasing subsidies in protecting wetlands. In the year the country carried out 42 wetland protection projects, increased 330,000 hectares of protected wetland areas, added four wetlands of international importance and 68 national wetland parks.The spokesman said in 2012 the country will further step up wetland protection and restoration, finish the second national wetland resources investigation and carry out pilot projects in assessing healthy conditions of the wetland ecological system.So far China has built more than 550 wetland natural reserves, 37 wetlands of international importance, which were listed in the Ramsar international wetland convention, and 100 national wetland parks. About half of the country's natural wetlands have been brought under effective protection, the SFA said.
