TASHKENT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the Coummunist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev on Wednesday vowed to boost bilateral ties.Liu, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said China was willing to work together with Uzbekistan to boost bilateral cooperation, especially in media, publishing and culture.Liu said bilateral ties had strengthened in recent years and he thanked Uzbekistan for its support of the core interests of China. Liu Yunshan (4th R), a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, meets with Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyaev (3rd L) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Aug. 25, 2010.Mirziyayev said China had been a true and sincere friend to Uzbekistan and relations with China had been a diplomatic priority for his country.Mirziyayev reiterated Uzbek support for China's positions on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and the fight against three evil forces of extremism, separatism and terrorism.Liu arrived in Uzbekistan on Monday for a goodwill visit. HUAYIN, Shaanxi, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers failed to close a breach of a flooding river embankment in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Sunday,rescue headquarters said.More than 3,000 soldiers and militiamen have been filling the gap of the embankment of Luofu River with stones and sand bags, and managed to narrow the 80-meter gap into 2 meters, said a spokesman at the headquarters.But the breach expanded again to eight meters wide as stones and sand bags ran out, he said.Luofu River, a tributary of Weihe River, breached Saturday morning.A total of 6,404 people from 1,587 households in Huayin had been evacuated before the flood early Saturday. No casualties have been reported.Torrential rains pounded Huayin City from 8 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's insurers felt the side effect of the country's booming auto market -- with operating losses totaling 2.9 billion yuan (427 million U.S. dollars) in 2009.Insurance Association of China said here Friday that its 30 member insurance companies that are engaged in traffic compulsory insurance business underwrote 85.02 million units of vehicles in 2009, up 23 percent from a year ago.Total compulsory insurance premiums rose 21 percent year on year to 66.8 billion yuan (9.84 billion U.S. dollars), according to the association.Meanwhile, the industry handled 11.78 million claims regarding traffic liability mandatory insurance products last year with reimbursements totaling 47.2 billion yuan (6.95 billion U.S. dollars), it said.Offsetting 2.4 billion yuan (353 million U.S. dollars) investment revenue with 18.6-billion-yuan (2.74 billion U.S. dollars) operating costs, the industry posted a loss of 2.9 billion yuan (427 million U.S. dollars) last year, according to the association.Retail sales of China-made autos rose 17.18 percent year on year to 1.056 million units in July this year, raising auto sales in the first seven months to more than 8.24 million units, up 28.58 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center released earlier this month.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhuanet) --Traffic authorities were still struggling to cope with days-long congestion on a major national expressway, nine days after traffic slowed to a snail's pace, and nearby residents are profiting on the latest traffic snarl by overcharging drivers for food.Since August 14, thousands of Beijing-bound trucks have jammed the expressway again, and traffic has stretched for more than 100 kilometers between Beijing and Huai'an in Heibei Province, and Jining in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China National Radio (CNR) reported Sunday.Small traffic accidents or broken-down cars are aggravating the jam, the report said."Insufficient traffic capacity on the National Expressway 110 caused by maintenance construction since August 19 is the major cause of the congestion," a publicity officer with the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, told the Global Times on condition of anonymity Sunday.Under current traffic regulations, the National Expressway 110 (G110), heading northwest from Beijing to Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, and then heading directly west, is available to trucks with a carrying capacity of eight tons and above. The road suffered serious damage due to the greater volume of heavy trucks.This month there have been more trucks carrying excessive coal or fruit, but the Beijing section of the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is available only to trucks with a weight of less than four tons.The congestion is expected to last for almost a month, since the construction is due for completion September 13.Traffic congestion and road safety have become major concerns for Chinese motorists.For drivers, suffering the congestion on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is nothing new. In a similar scene this July, traffic was also reduced to a crawl for nearly one month.Some killed time by playing cards, while some could only wait idly by.In the latest bout of congestion on the Huai'an section, a truck driver surnamed Huang, told the Global Times that he suffered "double blows.""Instant noodles are sold at four times the original price while I wait in the congestion," he said.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.
