ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. SHANGHAI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) - Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), China's largest commercial port and one of the country's major gateways for foreign trade, reported a 52 percent increase in profits during the first half of the year.Net profits for SIPG were 2.6 billion yuan (385 million U.S. dollars) from January to June, up 52.4 percent year on year, the company said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Saturday.Further, earnings per share rose 52 percent from a year earlier to 0.12 yuan, according to the statement.The company attributed the growth mainly to China's robust trade performance in the first half of the year.During the first half of 2010, China's exports rose 35.2 percent to 705.09 billion U.S. dollars while imports increased 52.7 percent to 649.79 billion U.S. dollars, according to the General Administration of Customs.SIPG shares on the Shanghai bourse closed down 0.48 percent to 4.17 yuan on Friday.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Drenched riverside towns in central and southern parts of China on Monday prepared for even more flooding as water levels in the country's huge rivers surged and rainstorms continued.In its latest update, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said floods this year had left 823 people dead and another 437 missing as of Monday morning.The direct economic loss had mounted to 154.1 billion yuan, more than double that of previous flood losses incurred in any single year since 2000.Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local authorities to fully prepare for more floods and related disasters.More than 370,000 soldiers and residents now have been mobilized to beef up the flood prevention efforts in eight provinces and municipalities along the country's major rivers, the flood control headquarters said.
