BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday. Wen said the talks were "detailed and friendly".

NANJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) - Three months after high school, 18-year-old Wang Mingyuan landed a part-time job in KTK Group, one of China's leading railway components manufacturers, in east China's Jiangsu Province.Unlike other migrant workers, Wang also started a three-year vocational school education at the same time, thanks to the work-study program launched this year by the Jiangsu provincial government.The program offers employment opportunities in high-technology and community-service fields to vocational school students. Currently, Wang works three days of each week in the company and spends another two days as a student, learning computer science and engineering."I felt very depressed about the future when I knew I failed the college entrance exam. But after attending the work-study program, I think if I work hard, I may fare as well as those with college educations," Wang said."Through the program, I could gain career-related, on-the-job work experience, which is valuable for my job hunting and career development," he continued.For a long time, college has been seen as a necessary, even if not sufficient, ticket to the middle class by the Chinese people. However, the steadily increasing number of students attending Chinese colleges since the late 1990s caused a growing number of graduates to fail in finding a job.In contrast, skilled workers are badly needed in China as skilled job vacancies hit 4 million across the country by the end of 2009."As the country's industrial restructuring accelerates, the demand for skilled workers will become increasingly buoyant," said Huo Jianguo, director of the Trade Research Institute affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce.On the one hand, the employment market ran short of skilled workers. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Authorities are set to drain stagnant water by the end of the month which continues to submerge part of a remote mountainous town in northwest China's Gansu Province. This comes three weeks after a devastating mudslide left more than 1,700 people dead or missing, a senior military official said Friday.For weeks, soldiers and work crews have been using explosives and excavators to remove the massive debris and rocks that were swept down by the mudslide into the waterway and formed a barrier lake, flooding the riverside areas of Chengguan Township, Zhouqu County.People's Liberation Army Deputy Chief of Staff Zhang Qinsheng, who also serves as the deputy head of the work group for Zhouqu relief under the State Council, announced Friday that the deadline for removing stagnant water is 12 p.m. August 30, and rescue crews are working hard to meet the deadline.Experts have warned that the stagnant water -- at some point rising high enough to completely submerge a street light pole -- would rot the foundations of 80 flooded buildings and caused them to collapse. The water also posed a serious threat to public health, as it was an easy breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria.Meanwhile, the government of Zhouqu on Friday ordered the sludge-covered area of the mudslide to be sealed off for both safety and health reasons.This came five days after authorities banned the recovery of bodies in the hard-hit area -- about five kilometers long and 300 to 500 meters wide, at the foot of Sanyanyu Mountain.An avalanche of rocks and mud roared down the Sanyanyu mountain slope at midnight on Aug. 7, leaving 1,456 dead and 309 missing as of Aug. 27. The bodies of the missing, along with an undetermined number of animals, were believed to be buried under the meters-deep sludge.Soldiers have dug a water channel in the sludge-covered area to direct waters into the Bailong River. The mud and debris were carried away and dumped at farmlands outside the town properof Zhouqu. However, they might be stopped from continuing and leave the devastated hard-hit area untouched. Authorities are looking for new areas to settle homeless residents who are now housed in disaster relief tents."No dumping sites can be found for the sludge if the clearing efforts continue. Also, the site sits in an area where mudslides frequently occur. It is not suitable for reconstruction," said a directive issued by the Zhouqu county government. Before the disaster, the county seat, hit by the mudslide, had about 45,000 residents. Nearly half of them lost their homes in the disaster.

ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other.
