SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The H1N1 strain of influenza is the most prominent strain of the illness in San Diego and around the nation so far this flu season, according to local health officials.Of 1,730 confirmed cases reported in San Diego this season, nearly 94 percent are influenza A, the County Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday. She was also suffering from meningitis, though it's unclear if she had been vaccinated or suffered from any other underlying medical conditions.Another local resident, identified as a 49-year-old male, died of the flu, according to health officials. That man did have underlying medical conditions though it wasn't clear if he had been vaccinated.This season, there have been nine flu-related deaths, officials say, compared to 44 deaths at this time last season.Health officials advise the best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, wash hands thoroughly and often, avoid going out if you're sick, and clean commonly touched services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. Rent hikes and slow income growth are making it more difficult for new grads to afford rental homes, according to a HotPads report. A typical college graduate in the U.S. spends 45.3 percent of his or her income on the median rent of ,740, up from 40.5 percent for the Class of 2009. The rent burden has grown by 22 percent as early-career median incomes have dropped 14.5 percent, HotPads analysts say. In San Diego, the median rent is more than the entire income for new graduates with degrees including biology and business management, at ,000 per year, and nearly the entire income for those with degrees in psychology, at roughly ,000 per year, HotPads reports. The top-earning degrees nationwide were primarily in engineering fields, with mining and mineral engineers earning a median ,854 after college. “As rent prices and student debts rise, affordability concerns for recent college graduates have garnered attention on the national stage,” said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. “Graduating from college still typically pays off in the long run, but slower wage growth for college graduates and rising costs have dampened the immediate financial benefits associated with a four-year degree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The mother who reported her 3-year-old son missing in Linda Vista Tuesday morning has been arrested. According to police, Maria Flores was arrested for filing a false police report. Flores reported her son, Kevin Serrano, missing from a home in the 2500 block of Ulrich St. just after 10 a.m., according to San Diego Police.At 3:00 p.m., police reported the boy was found unharmed in the 7500 block of Mesa College Drive. Officers said the child's caregiver called them and said he had been dropped off in the morning.Flores told police that Kevin was last seen at home. Police deployed officers on foot, patrolling on motorcycles, and air resources to help search for Serrano.“This is highly unusual. We’re taking this extremely seriously," police said during a press conference. "The door was unlocked and closed, according to the mom ... The clock is ticking for us, we’re extremely worried." 952
