NEW YORK (AP) — The American Museum of Natural History is removing a statue of Theodore Roosevelt on horseback with a Native American man and an African man on his sides after objections that it symbolizes colonial expansion and racial discrimination.Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday the city supports removal of the statue because it depicts Black and Indigenous people as subjugated and racially inferior.The statue at the museum's Central Park West entrance depicts Roosevelt on the horse with the Native American man and the African man standing on either side.The museum’s president, Ellen Futter, tells the New York Times the decision to remove the bronze statue comes amid the movement for racial justice following the killing of George Floyd.“As we strive to advance our institution’s, our City’s, and our country’s passionate quest for racial justice, we believe that removing the Statue will be a symbol of progress and of our commitment to build and sustain an inclusive and equitable Museum community and broader society,” said Flutter in a statement. 1072

NORFOLK, Va. - The first presidential debate of 2020 was all some voters needed to watch before heading to the polls.“[I] tuned into most of the debate last night, and that really solidified my decision to vote today,” said William Jimenez.But the thought of this year’s election is nerve-wracking for some voters.“Regardless of political persuasion and who you intend to vote for, people across the political spectrum are all experiencing that kind of stress,” said Gary Roftus, the director of Fairfield Psychological Associates.Jimenez says this election is important.“A lot is on the line. A lot is at stake,” he adds.Election stress - according to the American Psychological Association, it’s affecting more than 50% of Americans.Gabrielle Harrell felt the pressure at the polls Wednesday.“It’s been very stressful. As I was filling out the ballot, I was triple-checking to make sure I’m checking the right box,” Harrell said.Roftus says people are already stressed with the coronavirus.“We’ve never had an election where we are told is the most important election ever in the middle of a pandemic,” he adds.As we get closer to November 3, Roftus says politics comes up in his counseling sessions.“Inadvertently or directly because it's bothering them, people are bringing up the election all the time,” he adds.Roftus says the additional voting options are affecting stress levels.“Sometimes some people are uncertain as to where they should vote, whether they should vote by mail, is their ballot going to be accepted?"For people who want to get rid of some of that election stress, voting early is an option.Roftus says it gives some people some comfort and relief. New video appears to show workers for Caltrans handing out campaign materials defending the state's recent gas tax increase while on the job. The video, shot Tuesday, was released by the Yes on 6 campaign, which is pushing to repeal the recent 12-cent-per-gallon hike on the November ballot. The video shows Yes on 6 campaign manager Matt Stockton in the drivers seat of a car. He is apparently stopped at a Caltrans contractor's site along the 78 near Ramona. The video shows a man in a hard hat approaching the window, handing Stockton what appears to be a No on 6 campaign flier defending the gas-tax increase.Stockton in the video asks the man if he is with Caltrans, and the man answers that yes, his crew is working with Caltrans. Other images released by the campaign appear to show the workers were with Pico Rivera-based Manhole Adjusting Inc., and that a Caltrans supervisor was on site. "The misuse, the abuse of taxpayer funds being used in a political campaign, it is shameful, it is outrageous, and it needs to stop right now," said Carl DeMaio, who is chair of the Yes on 6 campaign. Caltrans, a state agency, said in a statement that it is looking into the matter, and has contacted its contractors to say it does not condone political advocacy on project sites. The No on 6 campaign, fighting to keep the gas tax increase, says it was unaware of the incident and that it denounces any inappropriate use of public resources or venues for campaign purposes."The No on 6 campaign very carefully follows all rules prohibiting the use of public resources for campaigning and often reinforces those rules to anyone involved with the campaign," the campaign said in a statement. Calls to the on-site Caltrans supervisor and Manhole Adjusting Inc were not immediately returned."If this is happening on more than one occasion, it's egregious," said Seth Kaplowitz, a finance lecturer at San Diego State University. NFL offensive lineman Richie Incognito was arrested at an Arizona funeral home Monday, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.Police report that they were called to the Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary at 3:30 p.m. for a disorderly conduct call. Incognito, whose father died earlier this week, as upset with the staff and allegedly damaging "property" inside the business and shouting at employees.Incognito also allegedly said that he had guns in his vehicle and threatened to shoot employees, according to the police report.The 35-year-old free agent offensive lineman was charged with misdemeanor threats and disorderly conduct charges. NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Orlando Ortega posted a Facebook video of his now-former co-worker, Eileen Marcinkowski, calling him the N-word Sunday. The video has more than 150,000 views.But the owner of the restaurant where the incident took place said the video doesn't tell the whole story. “The lady in the video he actually did hit. She had blood on her face, she was bleeding," said Jane Thursfield, owner of Cactus Jack. Thursfield said Ortega provoked the fight when he punched Marcinkowski in the face after he was let go by the restaurant. Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers could see no evidence of blood on Marcinkowski's face in the Facebook video. The owner said even if Marcinkowski was provoked, the racial comments were not OK. “No, no, of course not," Thursfield said. "No, we don’t condone that at all.”Other customers, like Johnny Samz, who said he regularly eats at Cactus Jack, agreed. “I don’t think it’s ever good, for anybody to use the N-word," said Samz. "I don’t care what the circumstances are.” WFTX's Jasmine Minor asked since Ortego no longer worked at the restaurant, if Marcinkowski would face the same fate. “She is still working here, yeah," said Thursfield. "I have not been here long and she’s working, but we will obviously address that.” The owner said the incident took place "off-the-clock" and "off business property."
