Carlsbad (KGTV): Voters in Carlsbad could put women in charge of the local government, as female candidates overwhelmingly outnumber male candidates in the races for Mayor and City Council.Right now, there is just one woman on the five-seat council, which includes the Mayor. The lone female, Cori Schumacher, is currently running for mayor against incumbent Matt Hall.Meanwhile, Council-members Mark Packard and Michael Schumacher are not seeking reelection.Six candidates have come forward to fill their spots, five of which are women. In District One, Linda Breen, Tracy Carmichael, Barbara Hamilton, and David McGee are running. In District Three, Priya Bhat-Patel is facing Corrine Busta.Depending on the outcomes of those elections, women could hold 3 of the five City Council seats. And, even if Schumacher loses, she'll still keep her current position on the Council."I think it's about time," says Loann Simon from the League of Women Voters in North County.Simon believes the rise of the women's movement in the last few years has spurred more women to come forward and get more involved in local politics."Women are becoming braver," she says. "I think it’s something that’s evolving, but after 2016, it’s kind of flipped a switch." A "pink wave" would be rare in Carlsbad. According to the Coast News, only 11 women have been elected to the City Council in the last 66 years.Simon says more female candidates means more of a focus on women's issues, like family, health and open space."It brings their voice to the table. Carnival Cruise Lines announced Wednesday that it had canceled most cruises that were scheduled to embark from U.S. through the end of January 2021.In addition, the company announced that all cruises embarking from Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Long Beach, California; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and San Diego has been canceled through the end of February and that all cruises on the Carnival Legend that embark from Tampa, Florida had been canceled through March 28.In a tweet, Carnival said that when it restarts operations in 2021, it will focus on cruises embarking from Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - One man is behind bars after police said he stabbed a man multiple times before leading police on a pursuit through North San Diego County.Carlsbad officers responded to reports of a traffic collision in the 6200 block of Paseo Del Norte at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they saw a red truck speed away and fail to yield to police.The suspected driver was later identified as 28-year-old Gervin Giovanni Chavez.At the scene, police found a man with multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, and torso and a female who was uninjured. Officers pursued Chavez and later apprehended him in Oceanside after he collided with a road median.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhoodWitnesses at the scene told police Chavez began an unprovoked attack against the man while they were in the vehicle together. The man was able to get out of the vehicle while it was still moving before Chavez stopped and got out to chase him.Chavez continued attacking the man before a woman broke up the attack. Chavez then returned to his vehicle and led police on a pursuit.Police do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. Chavez has been booked into Vista detention center and charged with attempted homicide.The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing multiple surgeries for his wounds. 1363

Celine Dion has canceled performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace March 27 through April 18. According to Dion's Facebook page, she has a condition in her middle ear known as Patulous Eustachian tube, which causes hearing irregularities, and makes it "extremely difficult" to sing.Dion has been experiencing this condition for the past 12-18 months, but it has been successfully treated with various ear drop medications. During the past couple of weeks these medications have no longer been working to treat the condition, so she will undergo a minimally invasive surgical procedure to correct the problem.Dion is expected to resume performances at The Colosseum as scheduled on Tuesday, May 22."Céline, Caesars Palace, and AEG Presents apologize for any inconvenience this causes ticket holders," according to a statement.Ticket holders for the canceled performances should be aware of the following: 922

Cathedral High School in Indianapolis announced the official name change of its entrepreneurship course to the "Chris Beaty Entrepreneurship Class."Chris Beaty was an Indianapolis business owner and former Indiana University football player who was beloved in the community.Beaty was one of two men who were shot and killed when violence erupted during police brutality demonstrations in Downtown Indianapolis. He was 38."There was so much pain caused by Chris's tragic murder, I felt it was too narrow to hear him only referred to as a former Cathedral and IU football player," Alex Purvis, who played football with Beaty at Cathedral High School in the early 2000's, said. "Chris was so much more than that, and I want to do my part to make sure his legacy continues at Cathedral."Purvis spearheaded the initiative to make the name change of the private school's entrepreneur course because he wanted to make sure Beaty was known for more than just football. Purvis says Beaty was not only an entrepreneur but says he was a friend, he was compassionate, and he always made people feel welcomed."He made everyone feel like a VIP. Few people have that ability," Purvis said.Purvis only knew Beaty for one year at Cathedral — but that was enough for Beaty to make an impact on Purvis.Purvis described himself as, "the smallest kid on the football team" his sophomore year, and Beaty was a senior star-athlete."Years later, when I started running into Chris downtown and various events, Chris always made me feel like I was the star quarterback on Cathedral's team. For no other reason than that was his genuine personality—he made people feel special. His warmth and positivity was infectious," Purvis said.Purvis said to best #LiveLikeChris, it's fitting to name Cathedral's entrepreneurship class in Beaty's honor. Beaty was always working on "the next big thing," Purvis said."I think the root of entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and outlining the steps to make it happen," Purvis said. He was a doer, a leader, and a builder—his friends turned into business partners and vice versa."Both Cathedral High School and Indiana University have also created the "Chris Beaty Foundation Scholarship," in his honor."Using that foundation and exploring entrepreneurship in high school will hopefully open students' eyes to all of the possibilities they have in college and beyond.
