SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 490 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths related to the illness, raising the region's totals to 26,098 cases and 524 deaths.Four women and eight men died between June 15 and July 22, and their ages ranged from 44 to 88. "But we still have the stick and other tools to ensure compliance."Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the team would enable the county to step up enforcement on "egregious violations" -- but the details on that enforcement were also unclear. She said the recent spike in cases began to occur after bars, hotels and gyms reopened June 12.According to Wooten, 95% of the county's COVID-19 deaths have had underlying medical conditions.The percentage of San Diegans testing positive rose to 158.5 per 100,000 residents as of Thursday's data, well above the state's criterion of 100 per 100,000.The last metric the county has failed to maintain is the percentage of cases that have been handled by a contact investigator within 24 hours of being reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) — The San Diego County Credit Union announced Wednesday it set a new Guinness world record for the most paper shredded in eight hours.The paper shredding company Shred-It shredded 239,060 pounds of paper Saturday at the credit union's 2019 Super Shred event at SDCCU Stadium.SDCCU broke the previous record for the most paper shredded in eight hours, which was set at its 2017 Super Shred event. The credit union also holds the record for the most paper collected in 24 hours."We thank everyone who came out to the SDCCU Super Shred event this past weekend and helped us achieve a new Guinness World Records title," said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. "SDCCU is pleased to not only achieve a new record, but to provide this much-needed, free service to the community."SDCCU also collected more than ,000 for the Stuff the Bus program, which provides food to more than 22,000 homeless students around the county. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services.
