SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Back in 1960, a young Amos Johnson Jr. was studying theology in Berkeley, Calif.It was the first time he was old enough to vote. Although he could cast a ballot without issue here in California, African Americans in southern states faced plenty of challenges."There were so many Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from voting in the south, all the civil rights in the south were really diminished," said Johnson.He describes the years leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bans racial discrimination in voting, as a time filled with protest and frustration around the country."It was a chaotic time, it was a time of great distress," he said.For the longtime San Diego pastor, the right to vote isn't something he's ever taken for granted. He says since being able to cast a ballot for himself, he's voted in every single election he could."I think that's where the power is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described.The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said.They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described.She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arthur Soriano didn't have that privilege until the age of 40, and now advocates about the power of voting.Seven years ago, Soriano was released from prison after serving a 19-year sentence for attempted murder."I needed that sense of belonging and I found it in gangs," Soriano said.He grew up in City Heights, with a single mother, and two younger twin sisters. He'd been in and out of trouble since he was a teenager. And of course, lost his opportunity to vote. But he turned his life around in prison."I went to college while I was in there so I self-educated while I was in prison. There was always aspirations of me wanting something better," says Soriano.That something better was a grassroots community organization he created in City Heights called Youth Empowerment. Soriano now helps to provide services for formerly incarcerated men and women.And four years ago at the age of 40, after serving his probation, Soriano voted for the first time."It was exciting, it was new, a new experience. But I felt the power of using my voice, of having that platform of my voice counts," Soriano said of voting in 2016.Now, with the opportunity to have a direct influence on others in his community, Soriano also shares his message about the privilege of voting, and the power it can have."I have a place at the table, I have a voice, I have something I can bring. That's the message that I have for the community. If we come together with your voice, no matter what opinion that may be, you can make a difference," says Soriano. 1556

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chelsea Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst who provided classified information to Wikileaks, spoke Monday at San Diego State University.Manning was convicted in 2013 of stealing 750,000 pages of documents and videos relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.A judge convicted Manning - then known as Bradley Manning - on 20 counts, including violations of the Espionage Act.After the 2013 sentencing, the ex-intelligence agent changed her name to Chelsea Manning and became a transgender woman.During one of his final acts in office, President Barack Obama commuted Manning's 35-year sentence, giving her an early release date.RELATED: Chelsea Manning released after 7 years in prisonManning has since joined the lecture circuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cockatiels rescued from unsanitary conditions in a Rancho Bernardo apartment are now available for adoption, the San Diego Humane society announced Tuesday. Humane Society Law Enforcement Officers seized more than 80 birds from one unit Jan. 23. They were flying freely through the home, creating an unhealthy situation, shelter officials said.Veterinarians cleared the birds for adoption. The cockatiels will need socialization and time to adjust to their new homes, according to the Humane Society.
