SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A homeowner in Clairemont hopes surveillance video is the key to tracking down the intruder who climbed straight through his window, before making off with some family heirlooms.Just off Balboa Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Monday, a man is seen ringing the doorbell at the home of Jeff Howell. After minutes of ringing and knocking, the man is recorded heading for the backyard, where he peers into the patio door and grabs a chair. He then pries open a locked window, steps onto the chair and into the home.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Just a sense of violation," said Howell.The man is then seen on the phone, possibly with a lookout."You can hear him discussing 'it's safe now' or 'somebody just went by,'" said Howell.Moments later, the man heads straight for the bedroom closet, dragging out a small safe, before carrying it out the front door.By the time Howell saw his text alert, the intruder was gone. The man was in the home for about 15 minutes. Inside the safe: authentication documents for artwork and family heirlooms belonging to his 11-year-old son, including a silver spoon given to him at birth and something from his rodeo-competing great-grandfather, who has passed."He had a prize-winning, silver belt buckle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla store in an upscale mall is facing scrutiny from customers who told Team 10 they were misled after buying hundreds—even thousands—of dollars worth of skin care products.Team 10 spoke to at least two customers who had similar complaints. When they tried to return unopened products, they said they were sold lies.Christianna Ortiz regrets walking into Gold Elements at the UTC mall on La Jolla Village Drive.“I’m honestly very embarrassed I fell for it,” Ortiz said.Last summer, she said Gold Elements employees encouraged her to purchase products, including a skin care regiment.“He wanted me to buy it for 0. I said yeah, that's not going to work. He said I'll tell you what, I'll throw in a facial and I was like, now that sounds interesting, but I don't want to come here alone. I'll throw in two facials,” Ortiz said the employee told her.When she went to her appointment, she said employees would not give her the facials she paid for.“I said, I want to return the stuff then and he said no return.I said I paid for something that was an outright lie,” Ortiz said.Ortiz said they never told her there was a no refund policy.She disputed the charge with her credit card and could not believe what happened next.“They sent me back the copy of my receipt along with another sheet of paper that listed the refund policy. I had never seen that sheet of paper, didn't exist!” Ortiz said.“You’re hustled,” said Sharon Garrow, another Gold Elements customer.Garrow spent nearly ,500 on products in September. She admits spending more than she should. When she tried to return the products the following morning—less than 24 hours later—she said she was not allowed to.She went to the store Saturday, where she said an employee told her there was nobody who could help her. She went again on Monday. “He [said] there’s no return on [these] products,” Garrow said.It was on her receipt, but like Ortiz, she signed on a computer and said the policy was not visible on the screen. She said nobody told her anything in person and there were no signs in the store that customers could see.A Team 10 investigative photojournalist also visited the store. He also did not see any return policies in the store.On the California Attorney General’s website, it says: “Stores that do not accept returns must clearly display their policy.”The California Civil code states that retail sellers shall display their policy “either on signs posted at each cash register and sales counter, at each public entrance, on tags attached to each item sold under that policy, or on the retail seller’s order form, if any.”Goods that cannot be resold due to “health considerations” are an exception. Both women said they never opened the Gold Elements boxes before trying to return the items.When Team 10 visited the store to get answers, there were no managers available to talk to us. An independent esthetician told Team 10 to contact a Gold Elements promoter. That person did not call back.Less than an hour later, a man who claimed he was the owner called Team 10 and said they always give the best help to customers and have not had problems with refunds. The man would not agree to an in-person interview, saying that he was not in town.He told Team 10 all future communication would be with his lawyer, but would not give his lawyer’s name.It was a different story on the Better Business Bureau website, where the store has an F rating. A 2017 class action lawsuit filed in Northern California against Gold Elements products and affiliated companies.Part of the complaint was that “complimentary facials” were not honored when customers tried to use them.““If I got taken, so many other people are probably getting taken. Somebody has to stop it,” Ortiz said.Team 10 discovered the La Jolla store could also be violating different state code.On Gold Elements’ wall is a price list for facials. The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, under the California State Department of Consumer Affairs, said a business that charges for facials should have an establishment license.The store has no record of that license.The women have a warning for others.“It’s not like I’m a dummy,” Ortiz said. “Do what I usually do. Check reviews ahead of time.”The Attorney General’s office said if any customers have concerns about a return policy, or lack of one, you can file a complaint with their office. 4419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park barber salon is on the brink of shutting down due to the coronavirus.Melissa and Christopher Cage met in high school. Melissa grew up in Watts and Christopher grew up in West L.A."I love it, you know, it made me who I am. It made me strong," Melissa said.Christopher said it was a dangerous place to grow up, "shootings, drive-bys, everything. That's why I wanted to get my kids away from that."They got married and in 2013, Christopher was laid off. They had three kids with a fourth on the way and at that moment he said he would never work for someone else again.He went to barber school. Five and a half years ago the family picked up and moved to San Diego with a dollar in Christopher's pocket."I think I gave my last dollar to a bum," he said, his wife nodding behind him. They were grateful to live in their aunt's living room as they saved up for a new place. They built up enough money to rent a run-down North Park house. They remodeled it and created Originality Barber Salon. Christopher has a row of barber chairs in the front half of the business and Melissa has a serene intimate salon in the back.Their challenges didn't end when the doors opened. Melissa said their biggest challenge was being accepted by the neighborhood.In 2018, someone spray-painted a racial slur in front of their shop. They cleaned it up and used it as motivation to succeed."I'm not going to fight hate with hate, I'm not going anywhere so you're just going to keep seeing me, so might as well," Melissa said.When the pandemic first hit, they kept their positive attitude, looking at it as a vacation."It was a vacation but then it started to get a longer vacation and I'm like okay, we're starting to dip into our savings now. I'm like we need to start figuring something out," she said.They were able to reopen for a few weeks, due to the county orders, and then, forced to close again.Multiple loan applications were denied. They said they were trudging through the permitting process to work outside. When Monday came and barbers could once again work indoors, Chris said it could be too late.They have a child with health issues, putting her at greater risk for catching the coronavirus, so they're trying to balance safety with finances.The couple said their goal of the business is to leave something for their children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nightmare of an opening week is continuing for an Ocean Beach tattoo shop. First, around 4 a.m. Saturday, surveillance video shows a man igniting an explosive against the window of Blackwater Tattoo Studio. Then, Sunday around 11:30 p.m., another man rides by on a skateboard, throwing a battery like cylinder through the same window. The owner, Mike Kellerman, shared surveillance video with 10News of both incidents. RELATED: Increased police presence in Ocean Beach following series of crimesThe first video shows a man skateboarding to the front of the business, taping something to the front window, and lighting it on fire. Moments later, the device explodes and blasts a hole in the window. "I expected the first one; the second one kind of pushed the limit," Kellerman said, adding he is not going anywhere. Kellerman said he believes his business is being targeted by a rival tattoo shop on Newport Avenue, but wouldn't say which one.RELATED: Homeless heroes help Ocean Beach theft victim track down her bikeHe told 10News he was confronted by a man from that shop earlier in the week who threatened him about opening in the community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information.
