Donald Stratton nearly made the ultimate sacrifice 79 years ago. Stratton was on board the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.According to the National Park Service, Stratton joined the Navy in 1940, and was assigned to the USS Arizona. On Dec. 7, 1941, Stratton was on the forward mast of the ship as it burned. A fellow sailor threw Stratton a line, which allowed Stratton to crawl to safety above the high water. But the flames took a toll on Stratton as burns covered 70% of his body. Stratton was then given a medical discharge the following September, but Stratton was not done serving his country. On Sunday, the U.S. National Park Service reported that Stratton has died at the age of 97, making him one of the last surviving service members from the Pearl Harbor attack. In Stratton's honor, the flags at the USS Arizona memorial in Hawaii were flown at half-staff. In January 1944, Stratton reenlisted and served through December 1946, obtaining the rank of Gunners Mate Second Class.The attack killed 2,390 service members, roughly half from the USS Arizona. Democratic donor Ed Buck has been charged with operating a drug house after a 37-year-old man suffered a nonfatal overdose at his apartment last week. Two other men have died of overdoses at Buck's house.Buck is accused of injecting the man with methamphetamine at his West Hollywood apartment on September 11, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. He lost his son, Joaquin, in the Parkland school shooting.Sunday would've been Joaquin's 19th birthday.Oliver was already scheduled to be in El Paso, Texas, this weekend, putting a mural up at an immigrant advocacy center, when the mass shooting happened Saturday."Because it is his birthday, we always try to put together things that Joaquin would do," Oliver said. "And this is something that Joaquin will be very happy to do. Scream out his support for the immigrants."He is continuing with the mural, but hasn't said what it will be yet, only saying it will show support for the city of El Paso. People will have to just wait until it is revealed."This is the reason why we are here," the artist said. "Now, yesterday, 29 people were shot down, just like Joaquin.“It's very painful.
