EL CAJON (CNS) - Murder and attempted murder charges were filed Friday against a man accused of shooting two men in El Cajon earlier this year, killing one of them.Roberto Hernandez, 26, faces 59 years to life in state prison if convicted of the charges stemming from the March 20 shooting that killed James Bowens, 20, and injured another 20-year-old man, both El Cajon residents, according to Deputy District Attorney Clayton Carr.Police said officers responded just before 8 p.m. to reports of gunshots in the area of 700 Applewood Drive. Witnesses said "a confrontation had taken place in the street near the intersection of Applewood Drive and Cedar Street," according to El Cajon police.Bowens died at a hospital of at least one gunshot to his upper body and the other man was shot in the leg, police said.A suspected motive for the shooting, and the relationship, if any, between Hernandez and the victims, was not disclosed.Hernandez, who entered a not guilty plea, is being held without bail and is due back in court June 29, according to county jail records. 1076

EL CAJON (KGTV and wire reports) - El Cajon police are investigating the shooting death of a man that resulted following an argument along a busy street Thursday.Police said gunfire erupted in the 1400 block of East Main Street in El Cajon shortly before 9:30 a.m., about a mile west of Granite Hills High School.Witnesses told 10News that two men were arguing on the sidewalk when one man took out a gun and shot the victim. According to police, an initial investigation indicates that an off-duty security guard tried to stop either a vehicle burglary or a carjacking. At some point, the vehicle's owner got involved, shooting and killing the suspect, police say. The shooter stayed on scene and cooperated before being arrested. (KGTV) - Vandals tagged two Catholic Churches in El Cajon with graffiti early Saturday morning, shocking parishioners."It's very devastating," says Father Daniel Shaba of the St. Peter's Chaldean Catholic Cathedral. "We fled persecution in Iraq, and here we are facing it again, in a place where we thought we wouldn't."Graffiti at St. Peter's, and also at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, featured swastikas, white power slogans, pentagrams, the Black Lives Matter acronym BLM, and the words "Biden 2020.""It was very confusing," says Father Shaba. "It had things that didn't have to do much with each other."Father Shaba found the graffiti early Saturday morning when he arrived at St. Peter's. He posted a video of it on twitter.Word of the vandalism spread fast, but help from the community came more quickly.By mid-morning, community members with power washers and paintbrushes helped Father Shaba clean up at St. Peter's. He told 10News everything had either been covered up or washed away by the afternoon and called the help a blessing."I'm very proud of them," Father Shaba says of his community. "We had an enormous amount of people come and see how they could help us in any way, shape, or form. But to also hold tight to Jesus."The Sheriff's Department confirmed they are investigating both instances. In a statement, they say no suspects have been identified, but there is "no tolerance for these crimes occurring in our communities."Father Shaba says surveillance cameras at his church caught high-quality footage of the vandals. (KGTV) - The City of El Cajon is working to revitalize its main street, with the Magnolia Theater at the centerpiece of the effort.The theater used to be the El Cajon Performing Arts Center. In 2009, during the latest recession, the city shut it down to save money.Over the last few years, the city spent more than million to renovate the building and turn it into "The Magnolia."The building got new air conditioning and heating, new carpet, new seating and more modern amenities."We've rebranded it," says City Manager Graham Mitchell. "We have a new name, a new management company and a new way of doing things. There's a new philosophy of how we operate the facility."RELATED: East County Performing Arts Center to Re-Open as "The Magnolia"As part of the renovation, city leaders entered into an agreement with Live Nation to handle booking for the newly refurbished venue. Live Nation will provide up to 70 acts per year. The city will pay them a flat fee and then keep 100 percent of the proceeds from the shows.The venue reopened in October of 2019, and Mitchell says he's already seeing the impact it's having on the downtown area."My office is right across the plaza from the Magnolia, and pre-show, watching people spill into El Cajon, people that have not ever been here or haven't been here for a while, you can see the enthusiasm that this venue is building," he says.Business owners in the area agree.RELATED: Construction problems delay renovation of East County concert venueLupe Marrujo's family owns two restaurants on Main Street, the Downtown Cafe and Por Favor.
