HARPERS FERRY, W.V. – For more than 2,000 miles, the Appalachian Trail winds its way through more than a dozen states.It’s so-called “psychological midpoint” is the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.“This community represents all the communities up and down the trail,” said Sandy Marra, who heads up the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.Ever since the pandemic began, she said there’s been a noticeable increase in people hiking the trail.“On any given weekday, even in the dead of summer, typically you wouldn't see anyone out on our trails,” Marra said. “And during the week now, you could see dozens and dozens of people just hiking.”That’s something other public lands across the country are seeing, too, in the time of COVID-19 and social distancing.Deborah Williams is with the Outdoor Industry Association, based in Colorado.“We did see a trend of more people exploring the outdoors in March and April and then that really did continue into May and June,” Williams said. “And what we initially saw is a little bit of escapism, in the first few weeks, actually continued.”That outdoor recreation can have a big impact on the economy.In West Virginia, for example, the outdoor industry is responsible for more than 91,000 direct jobs, 0 million in local and state tax revenue and billion in consumer spending.Across the country, it all adds up to 7 billion in consumer spending, supporting 7.6 million jobs.Williams said there’s the potential for that to grow even more in every state across America, in part, because of federal funding from the new “Great American Outdoors Act,” which was just passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.“It will fully fund the land and water conservation fund to the tune of 0 million,” Williams said. “So, this is our country's really flagship mechanism for funding conservation and maintenance of our public lands and waters.”Back at the Appalachian Trail, Sandy Marra hopes people now rediscovering the outdoors take care to protect it, as well.“Because of the pandemic and so many people wanting to get outside, the resource was being overwhelmed,” she said. “This is a great chance for us to reach a whole new audience of people. This is their park, right? So, they get to use it and enjoy it, but they also have a responsibility too.”It's a responsibility that can help future generations experience what’s great about the great outdoors. 2419

Gun policy has been a longtime devise topic but not usually a top issue among Latino voters. That is until this election.A recent research study found 7 out of 10 Latinos voters want stricter gun policy.In El Paso, Texas, a mass shooting that left 23 people dead and several injured has caused people to pay closer attention to gun policy and take a stance.On Monday, we ran into Adrian Loera at Sportsman Elite. Loera was at the gun store practicing shooting his gun at the range.“You never know when something is going to happen,” he said. “That is one of the reasons why I got my handgun license, because of the events that happened here last year.”Loera is referring to August 3, 2019, when a gunman drove hundreds of miles to an El Paso Walmart, with the sole purpose of killing Latinos.Last year's shooting changed a lot for El Paso. It robbed the community of a sense of security they once felt. Loera says he never thought about owning a gun before and now not only does he own a gun, he wants to make sure no one takes away his right to do so. His new beliefs would influence his vote this coming election.While Loera’s views on gun policy have changed, the same horrible event had quite the opposite impact on Miranda Escobar Gregory. As she stands in front of the newly erected memorial for all 23 of the victims, she recalls the paralyzing fear she felt the day of the shooting. She says the entire city was locked down for hours.“It’s not a need to have a giant machine gun or semi-automatic gun when you are just playing it safe,” said Escobar Gregory.She wants assault-style guns to be banned at the federal level and a mental health screening as part of the purchasing process. In Texas, you can buy a gun as long as you pass a criminal background check.Critics of a more restrictive purchasing process say there are other tactics that should be considered.“Another law preventing or trying to prevent law abiding citizens from getting access wouldn’t have changed the outcome of that day,” said Richard Garcia, the director of training at Sportsman Elite.Garcia says he is a proponent of decreasing all types of violence but feels as a nation, we need to get to the core issue of why these things keep on happening.“I think we should be moving towards the actual root of the problem, which does back to the individual. What can we learn from the person who did this so we can prevent something like this from happening in the future,” said Garcia.Garcia says conversations need to be had and arguments need to be worked through so that we can come to a compromise on how to best address the issue.“I know there is no such thing as a perfect compromise, but that is what the laws in the books are for,” said Garcia.Escobar Gregory says she will continue to fight for stricter gun policies and vote for those who will support her wishes. Meantime, people like Loera, who fear his right to own a gun might get a little more difficult, are rushing to get a license to carry and purchase a firearm. 3018

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania’s secretary of state said Thursday that “we definitely could” know which presidential candidate will win the battleground state by the end of the day.Secretary Kathy Boockvar made the comment when asked about the results during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday.“You know, I’ve been saying that we’ll have the overwhelming majority counted by tomorrow, but it’s looking like we’ll have the overwhelming majority counted by today,” Boockvar said.During the interview taped at about 1:33 p.m. ET, Boockvar added that there were about 550,000 ballots that were still in the process of being counted. By 5:45 p.m., the number of ballots left to be counted dwindled to 326,000 ballots. At that point, Trump's lead dropped to 90,000. “Some of those may have already been counted but are not yet uploaded, but yeah, they’re coming in,” she said. “We’re getting 10,000 here, 20,000 here. Counties are furiously at work and it’s looking like we’re ahead of schedule.”Boockvar said most of the mail-in ballots left to be counted are from the state’s larger cities and the communities that surround them, meaning they may favor former Vice President Joe Biden.Pennsylvania is one of the few remaining states that haven’t been called in a presidential candidate’s favor and it could end up determining who’s in the White House come January. It’s likely a must win for President Donald Trump to reach the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.Boockvar delivered an early evening update on Thursday. She said that once the mail-in votes are counted, the state will begin counting overseas military ballots and provisional ballots. Boockvar could not give a figure on how many ballots are left there. According to Matthew Weil with the Bipartisan Policy Center, The Keystone State is taking a long time to count their votes because of an influx of absentee and mail-in ballots, in numbers Pennsylvania hasn’t ever dealt with before.“In some of the biggest jurisdictions – Philadelphia, Pittsburgh – they just didn't have the experience counting those quickly,” Weil said. “And the fact that the legislature did not give them time before Election Day to count those, even knowing that this was coming, means that most likely we're not going to have great results until Friday.” 2315
