As summer winds down, doctors across the country are warning flu season is fast approaching. Many are watching Australia to see what may happen here when flu season arrives."Where Australia is obviously in the Southern Hemisphere, they're in winter while we’re in summer. We look at their flu season as kind of a six-month predictor of how ours is going to turn out," says Dr. Kenny Banh, the assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at UCSF-Fresno.The number of flu cases in Australia has taken a dramatic dip compared to last year. Dr. Banh says it's unclear if the U.S.'s flu rates will be as low as Australia's.A lot of it has to do with coronavirus precautions that people are taking, Banh hypothesizes."That's what we predict. It's not really so much a change in vaccination rates as much as the social distancing and all the preventative steps of coronavirus that are having the same effect of spreading any disease, including influenza," says Dr. Banh.Doctors say strict measures in Australia to protect people from COVID-19, such as physical distancing, wearing masks and hand washing, have helped prevent the spread of the virus and, incidentally, the flu. Now, some are wondering whether the United States will also see a drop in flu cases this winter."Seeing that they have a drop in influenza, we will certainly have a small influenza season. The issue is Australia is approaching, and the U.S. is approaching coronavirus very different. Their rates are different and they have a much lower per capita infection rate than we have in the U.S. for various reasons," says Dr. Banh.Australia has taken a broader, nationwide approach to protecting people against COVID-19, unlike in the United States, where each state has implemented different restrictions. That's one reason why Dr. Tanya Altmann with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends every person, 6 months of age and older, gets a flu vaccine."I think this winter, it may be hard to differentiate between the flu and COVID-19 because so many of the symptoms-- cough, fever, aches, chills, are very similar. So by getting the flu vaccine and decreasing the chance your child has influenza, that will help us figure it out," says Dr. Altmann.Dr. Banh says Australia's plummeting flu rates and nationwide protective measures from COVID-19 will hopefully encourage many here in the United States to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone as healthy as possible this winter. 2470

BALDWIN, La. — New details are emerging as law enforcement investigates the death of a 15-year-old boy who died under suspicious circumstances in Louisiana.KATC obtained police reports from Oct. 30 when the teen, Quawan “Bobby” Charles, was reported missing from his home in Baldwin and was found dead four days later near Loreauville.Records show that Charles’ mother contacted the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office around 8:10 p.m. on Oct. 30 to report that her son was missing. The mother stated that her son did not come home and had on a West St. Mary High School jacket.SMPSO then dispatched an officer with the Baldwin Police Department to the 600 block of MLK Street in Baldwin.At 8:45 p.m., BPD spoke with Charles’ father and mother who said that he was last seen at around 4 p.m. Police then entered Charles’ name into the National Crime Information Center, which is a nationwide database used by law enforcement to locate missing persons, as a missing juvenile.According to a police report from BPD, Charles’ mother said that she was not present at the time that he went missing because he was staying with his father because the two did not live together. Charles had only recently been allowed to stay with his father for the two weeks prior to his disappearance.Charles’ father told police that he went to the store around 4 p.m., but after returning a few minutes later, he attempted to knock on the door to Charles’ room several times without a response.The father told police that he then used a tool to gain entry into the room and discovered the teen was missing.Both parents told police that Charles had not been a problem at home but had been placed on a curfew by the 16th Judicial District Court because of disciplinary problems at school.The parents told police that Charles did not have any friends and had never left home before without them knowing about it.The police state in the report that there was a football game taking place at West St. Mary High School in Baldwin as well as an event called Boo on the Bayou in Franklin. Charles’ father told police he would begin searching those areas. However, he later contacted SMPSO and said he was not able to locate Charles’ at either location.This is when police entered Charles’ name into the NCIC database as a missing juvenile while being on the lookout for him.Charles’ mother then told police that she would be heading back to her home in Youngsville to check and see if he had returned there.Charles was found dead four days later on Nov. 4 in a rural area off Ed Broussard Road near Loreauville. Since then, some family members are claiming Charles was murdered, and believe police ignored their initial cries for help.The family tells KATC they were told by investigators that Bobby drowned, but that they don't believe that. They cite a graphic photo of his body circulating online.Family members also say Charles left his home with a 17-year-old friend and the teen's mother without permission.Several dozen people, including Bobby's family, people from the community, and an organization called Stand Black, gathered on the courthouse steps Wednesday evening. They're demanding a thorough investigation of the case.The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. Deputies have not said if Charles was killed. IPSO says it's being investigated under suspicious circumstances. ATLANTA (KGTV) - An Atlanta Delta flight was forced to return to the ground shortly after takeoff when black smoke began billowing from one of its engines.The Delta aircraft took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Wednesday shortly after 6 p.m. EDT when the smoke was reported, according to airport officials. Multiple reports indicate the plane was heading for London's Heathrow Airport.About 43 minutes after takeoff, the plane returned to the ground and airport fire crews hosed down the engine. The plane was then towed back to its terminal.RELATED: Southwest passenger is first to die on a US airline since 2009No injuries were reported and the airport endured "minimal impact" to other operations, officials said.The emergency landing occurs one day after a Southwest Airlines plane blew an engine while traveling from New York to Dallas and was forced to land in Philadelphia.Jennifer Riordan, 43, was struck by shrapnel from the engine and partially sucked out of a window. At Tivoli Brewing Company, canning beer has gone from celebratory to an almost sobering experience.“This sucks,” said Ethan Tsai, Tivoli brewery director.Tsai says Tivoli and other breweries across the country are suffering from an aluminum can shortage.“We don’t have enough cans, we’re not going to be able to sell enough beer,” he said. “This is going to be a financial pinch to a whole lot of people.”On a normal week, Tivoli would turn out almost 400 cases of beer. During the last few of weeks, however, they’re struggling to get out 100.“Sales is going to suffer,” Tsai said. “And if sales suffer, then our ability to survive is going to be jeopardized.”Experts say there are several reasons for this shortage in cans. More people are stocking up on beer in stores and taking it home during the COVID crisis and less customers are going out to bars and restaurants.Whatever the case, production of cans isn’t keeping up with the demand.“For the year 2020,” Tsai said, “Ball (Corporation) is estimating approximately 10 billion, that’s billion with a “B”, aluminum can shortage."Ball Corporation is one of the world’s leading aluminum can providers. It’s responding to the recent surge in demand for cans by expanding its operations and building two news production plants which they say should be completed by 2021.“It might mean that some brewers get less revenue and have to make more difficult choices,” said Bart Watson, chief economist with the Brewers Association, an organization representing thousands of craft breweries across the country.He says cans make up a majority of craft beer packaged sales and that this shortage of could cost companies money and employees their jobs.“It’s tough to see the small brewers, who put so much sweat equity into their businesses, be brought down by really something that not their fault,” Watson said. “First the pandemic and now these additional challenges like a shortage.”Back at the brewery, Tsai is trying to figure out how to logistically juggle this shortage of cans during a pandemic to make sure his staff still have jobs and that this brewery survives.“We are all in this together,” he said. “None of us benefit from just taprooms suddenly disappearing.” 2226

BAKERSFIELD, California — A Kern County, California judge decided Thursday to set free a man who's been on death row for 26 years.Vicente Benavides, 68, was freed from San Quentin Prison Thursday afternoon.The judge said all Benavides' charges were changed to not guilty.  His defense attorney told KERO television station that Benavides will not have to return to Kern County.On Tuesday, District Attorney Lisa Green made the announcement that her office would not file charges against Benavides, saying the case would be nearly impossible to retry in court. She said it would be very difficult to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt of Benavides' guilt.According to a decision released by the California Supreme Court last month, the convictions of Vicente Benavides in 1993 "were based on false evidence and that he received ineffective assistance of counsel."The decision also says that "false evidence was introduced at trial and that petitioner's convictions of substantive sexual offenses, special-circumstance findings, and judgment of death must be vacated."Benavides was convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder, rape, and other charges. He was sentenced to life. He was serving his term on death row in San Quentin. It was asked that his murder conviction be reduced to second-degree murder. That was also thrown out. The judgment has been vacated entirely. Benavides' defense attorney says his client's case is extremely rare, saying only two similar cases have occurred since the death penalty was reinstated in the 1970's.The California Supreme Court cited multiple doctors who evaluated 21-month-old Consuelo Verdugo in November 1991 when she died. The baby was taken from the Delano Regional Medical Center to Kern Medical Center then eventually the UCLA Medical Center where she died November 25, 1991.Multiple reports were made by doctors who said based on the inability to insert a catheter, bruising found near Consuelo's genitalia and other factors, they believed she had been sexually assaulted. 2101
