Police and other law enforcement are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals, but sometimes technology can get in the way.Apple made headlines a couple years back, when the company refused to unlock a phone when asked by law enforcement.Then came Grayshift, a company that specializes in cracking iPhones.  "Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard,” says digital security expert Steve Beaty. “Has been a bit of a chess game right."Beaty is a digital security expert professor with Metropolitan State University of Denver."It appears that people aren't now able to break into the iPhone with the most recent release of version 12 of iOS," Beaty explains.While Apple isn't saying much about what they've done, law enforcement around the country will have to scramble to find new ways to get into these devices.Beaty seems to think it's related to a small change in access by adding a USB restrict mode--that disables devices after a certain amount of time if it’s plugged into your phone."They can plug into iPhones, that historically in general, have what we call brute force them," Beaty explains.Brute forcing allows Grayshift to continue putting in passcodes until they find the right one. But because these external devices deactivate after about an hour, their process is interrupted. That's the main belief in how Apple is thwarting these devices.If you're worried about security, it's simple to activate USB restrict mode on your phone. There may be some other problems though you could run into charging issue."So, for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game that they are going to be advances made on either side,” says Beaty. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive, if you will, checkmate in the foreseeable future." 1776

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds.The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page.However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator.As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. — A bear attack inside a home left one person with "severe swipe injuries" early Friday in the Aspen, Colorado, area.Randy Hampston, public information officer for the northwest region of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said a call about the attack came in at 1:28 a.m.Hampston said the house, which is located in the Clear Creek neighborhood outside Aspen, has a lever door handle on its front door. He said some newer homes have this feature to be ADA compliant, but it makes entry much easier for bears."You’re talking about a 400-pound animal — they can push down with enough force to sometimes pop those locks," he said.The homeowner heard noises in the living room and went to check on it, Hampston said. Then, he saw the large bear.The bear swiped at the him, leaving him with severe lacerations to his head, neck and face.The bear then ran out of the home, Hampston said. Other family members in the house called 911.The injured homeowner was transported to a hospital with severe injuries to his face and neck, according to CPW. He is undergoing surgery, but is stable and his injuries are not life-threatening.Hampston said CPW has been receiving reports of a bear in the area and believes this was the same one. He said he also believes it's the same bear that has been reportedly getting into trash in the area over the past few years. Past attempts to haze or trap it to relocate it elsewhere have been unsuccessful.Wildlife officers are working in the area. A search for the bear is underway with the help of tracking dogs.Because DNA evidence was collected in the home, wildlife officers will be able to test the DNA of a suspected bear to ensure it's the same one.Once they find the bear, it will be euthanized due to its history of run-ins with humans and this attack, Hampston said.He said while it's not rare to see a bear around Aspen, it is uncommon for one to get inside a home.This marks the first bear attack in Aspen this year.Three people reported a bear attack in Aspen last summer, he said.
