BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago.     They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful.     President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship.     In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted.     Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation.     The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency.     On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip.     China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.

The premier held talks with specialists in a wide range of fields at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in downtown Beijing on Nov. 20 and again on Nov. 25The economists and entrepreneurs gave their views on the current global economic and financial situation, the country's fiscal and monetary policies, issues concerning rural areas, farmers, and agriculture, real estate sector, financial sector, industrial restructuring, how to improve people's livelihoods, and the difficulties of some sectors and companies, and also offered some suggestions.     After listening to the economists and entrepreneurs. the premier said the complication of the ongoing global economy had brought along new difficulties to framing and adjusting macro policies.     He said it would be difficult to make the right decisions if one was to only "rely on the past experience", or "the wisdom of a few".     He said the government would listen to a wide range of opinions in a bid to become "more scientific and democratic" in decision-making, and improve the transparency of decision-making.     He added the government's earlier decision to adopt "active" fiscal and "moderately active" monetary policies in response to changing economic conditions had played an important role in bolstering the economy.     He asked the State Council and ministries to deliberate on suggestions offered by economists and entrepreneurs for further improvement of macro policies.     Vice premiers Li Keqiang, Hui Liangyu, Zhang Dejiang and Wang Qishan, and State Councilor Ma Kai were also present at the meetings.     Premier Wen and some vice premiers also inspected enterprises in regions across the country, including the eastern Shanghai Municipality and Zhejiang and Fujian provinces and central Hubei Province, during the interval of the two meetings. BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese industry faced a grim situation, as the global financial crisis would have a deep impact on the industrial and information technology sectors, a senior official warned on Wednesday.     Zhu Hongren, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the country needed to increase investment in key areas and weak points of the industrial economy. The government should maintain a reasonable investment scale and step up technical innovation.     He said the imbalance between weakening demand and expanding capacity would become more problematic as the crisis spread. Labor-intensive and export-oriented businesses would be hurt as prices of energy and raw materials would continue fluctuating.     Among others, the electricity, textile and non-ferrous metal industries had already sustained heavy losses, with 18.3 percent of large industrial companies losing money during the first eight months of the year.     Industrial output growth fell to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest since April 2002. Power generation and oil production grew a mere 3.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, while steel output fell 9.1 percent year-on-year.     In the first three quarters, the value of industrial exports rose 15.7 percent, which was 6.1 percentage points less than a year earlier.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will adopt preferential fiscal and investment policies to boost economic development and trade in border areas, said the Ministry of Finance (MOF) on Thursday.     As of Nov. 1, residents who live in the border will be exempted from taxation of the daily necessities such as food and cloth costing in total no more than 8,000 yuan (1,171.3 U.S. dollars) per individual in one day.     Fiscal departments at all levels of government will allocate funds to support enterprises that engage in small-amount trade in border areas as of Nov. 1. But the MOF didn't reveal how much money would be allocated.     The amount of the fund is expected to increase every year, and no limitation was set on the period, said the MOF
