American Airlines says employees can wear pins supporting Black Lives Matter. The airline is calling it a matter of equality, not politics. With the decision, Texas-based American joins Starbucks, Delta Air Lines and other major companies that let employees show support for the movement that protests police violence against Blacks. Starbucks let employees wear Black Lives Matter shirts after initially reportedly banning them.President Donald Trump has urged supporters to boycott Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after a report that it approve Black Lives Matter clothing but not pro-police Blue Lives Matter or Trump’s campaign slogan. An Uber driver in Arizona said he pulled up to give a ride Easter morning and ended up with an AR-15 assault rifle in his face. Edward Martinez said two men called for a ride and while he waited at the curb, a third man came out of the house with no shirt and a gun. "He points it at me and says, 'call 9-1-1,"' said Martinez. Not knowing what was happening, Martinez started dialing and talking to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, and the guy with the gun went back inside. In the meantime, he said the two riders got in his car and told him not to worry about the guy with the gun. About that time, the man with the gun returned. "That's when he put a round in the chamber," said Martinez. "The [passenger] door was open... and then he had the weapon, it was about [half way] in the car, and I just took off."Martinez drove to a Quick Trip. He said his passengers tossed something out the window on the way and disappeared when he parked to wait for El Mirage police. An El Mirage officer ended up arresting the armed man, 25-year-old Nicholas Brasseur. Police searched his home and wrote in the police report that they found drugs and 25 AR-15 assault rifles.  "My profession is manufacturing AR-15s," Brasseur told the court at his initial appearance. The judge informed him that he would not be allowed to continue working with weapons or be in possession of any weapons while awaiting a resolution to the charges, which include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possessing or using a weapon during a drug offense.       Martinez said he reported the incident to Uber but has not received a followup call. "I'm missing work. Where's any concern? What can we do to help you? Do you need to see a counselor? Or any of that kind of stuff," said Martinez. Meanwhile, he says he doesn't know if he'll ever drive again. "Not today, not the next day," said Martinez. "Why would I want to put my life [at risk] and lose my life. I can't."An Uber spokesperson told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix they've banned all the people involved from the Uber app and will co-operate with police.  The spokesperson said they're glad Martinez is OK and plan to follow up with him soon.  2268

As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy.It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans.As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added.As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

An 18-year-old Nebraska student was arrested earlier this week after police say he threatened to shoot classmates that joined a nationwide movement to walk out of classes in support of gun control.Nicholas J. Scott, 18, a student at Bellevue West High School, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Sarpy County Jail on felony charges of making terroristic threats of violence and possession of a destructive device.Bellevue Police had been investigating a verbal threat reportedly made Wednesday about shooting students at the high school who participated in a planned student walkout as part of a nationwide student protests against gun violence in schools.Police said Scott had been taken out of school by a parent before officers were able to speak with him, according to the press release. But Scott was later contacted and agreed to meet with officers on Thursday. It was at this meeting that he was arrested, the release states.Officers later conducted a search of Scott's bedroom as part of the investigation, finding "various unassembled materials that are commonly known to be used in the manufacturing of explosive devices," which were seized by Bellevue Police as evidence, the release states.Scott remains in the custody of the Sarpy County Jail."The (Bellevue) Police Department would like to publicly thank those who came forward with the information regarding this case," the release states. "The safety guideline of 'Hear Something, Say Something' played an extremely important role in quickly bringing this incident to a safe resolve." 1654

An airline employee stole a passenger plane Friday from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and flew it for an hour with military jets chasing him, pulling off aerobatic stunts before crashing in a wooded island 25 miles away, authorities said.The 29-year-old Horizon Air ground service agent -- the only person aboard -- died, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said, without further identifying him.The incident, which the FBI's Seattle office did not consider terrorism, raises questions about airport security.
