At least two Chinese universities could achieve "world-class" status within the next 20 years, the president of one of the United States' oldest higher education institutions said yesterday in Beijing. Yale University's Richard Levin made the comment at the start of a 10-day visit by about 100 Yale faculty, students and administrators, the biggest delegation from the university ever to visit China. President Hu Jintao, who extended the invitation to the Ivy League university during his 2006 visit to the US, met the delegation last night at the Great Hall of the People. Hu said the visit of Levin's delegation will help promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, as well as the stable and healthy development of Sino-US relations. The president expressed his hope that Yale University students build strong relationships with the young people of China. In an interview with Chinese media, Levin said the country had made great progress in strengthening its top universities, by investing more in first-class facilities including research labs. "The key ingredients to being a world-class university are top students and top faculties," Levin said. "I don't think there is any doubt that China's top universities today have students that are as good as any in the world. "What remains to be built are faculties that are at the very frontier of research in their fields and worldwide leaders in their research endeavors." The delegation will spend its days meeting government leaders and visiting universities and other historical and cultural sites in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an. The Chinese government and Yale are sharing the cost of the trip. Participating students and faculty, the majority of whom had never before been to China, were handpicked to represent the university's different schools. Delegation groups will today meet with government leaders, including Yang Jiechi, the minister of foreign affairs and Jiang Zhenghua, chairman of the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party. The visiting students may even bridge some cultural divides. "I think that young people can play a very important role in securing a peaceful future for the US and China," Levin said. "Today, especially among the older generation, there is a great deal of ignorance about China in the United States, and some ignorance about the United States in China as well." Before leaving for China, some of the delegation met with US President George W. Bush, who spoke about the importance of "people-to-people diplomacy". "I think the trip will serve a cultural purpose in that our students will get a deeper understanding of Chinese culture to the extent that this throws into public view the importance of student-to-student exchanges," Levin said. "And that certainly serves a political purpose."

The others are Hu, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin and Li Changchun.Before taking over as Party chief of Shanghai earlier this year, Xi, 54, was the top Party official in Zhejiang Province and the governor of Fujian.Li Keqiang, 52, is the youngest among the newly-elected. He was the governor of Henan before becoming Party chief of Liaoning.Hu led the new leadership line-up in the Great Hall of the People and introduced the new members to the media Monday."Both Xi and Li are relatively younger comrades," Hu said.He Guoqiang, 63, has established a reputation for his tough stance against corruption since taking over the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee in 2002. He becomes head of the Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.Zhou serves as the minister of public security and the first commissar of the Armed Police Force.In his speech, which was televised live nationwide, Hu vowed to do the best "to be worthy of the great trust" of all Party members and live up to the expectations of people."We will be firmly committed to development, which is the Party's top priority in governing and rejuvenating the country, concentrate on construction and development, make all-round progress in developing the socialist market economy, socialist democracy, an advanced socialist culture and a harmonious socialist society, and strive for scientific development by putting people first and making it comprehensive, balanced and sustainable," Hu said.He also promised to press ahead with the reform and opening-up, serve the people wholeheartedly and adhere to scientific, democratic and law-based governance."We will pursue an independent foreign policy of peace and unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development and a win-win strategy of opening-up."We will develop friendship and cooperation with all other countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and push for the building of a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity," he added.Apart from the nine-member Standing Committee, 16 others were named to the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. Among those newly elevated are Beijing Mayor Wang Qishan, Commerce Minister Bo Xilai, Jiangsu Party Secretary Li Yuanchao, Tianjin Party Secretary Zhang Gaoli, Chongqing Party Secretary Wang Yang and Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xu Caihou.Liu Yandong, 61, is the only woman in the Political Bureau. She is the vice-chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top advisory body.Hu was also named chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC at the first plenary session Monday. CHONGQING -- A bus fire that killed 27 people in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Tuesday had been an arson attack, local police said on Wednesday.Xiao Yonghua, a former employee of the company that operates the ill-fated Yutong bus, hid gasoline in his baggage before he got on the bus that left Wansheng district for downtown Chongqing at around 5:00 pm on Tuesday, said Wang Yunsheng, deputy head of the municipal public security bureau.In less than 20 minutes, the bus carrying 38 people caught fire. The driver pulled over, and the panic-stricken passengers tried to flee. But the flames started in the front of the bus and blocked the exit.Twenty-seven were killed in the accident, including 17 men and 10 women, and the remaining 11 people were injured.One passenger, Zhang Dazhong, said he had to jump out of the window to survive but was injured on the head.Xiao, 50, was sitting with his wife, 38-year-old Zhang Xiaoya, in the first row on the left side of the bus, right behind the driver, said Wang.Both died in the fire.Lab work has confirmed the presence of gasoline traces on their seats.Until September 20, Xiao was deputy manager of the Wansheng branch of the Guanzhong Public Transport Company that owned the bus.He was suspended from his post because of family disputes, and was unhappy with the punishment, the company said.The Ministry of Public Security sent experts to join the investigation in Chongqing.Hospital sources said the 11 injured are out of danger.By 5:00 pm Wednesday, 26 of the dead have been identified by their families.
