DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Once they jump out of the plane, they may feel light as air, but they’ll be wearing … gear that weight more than 100 pounds.”The “fear keeps you sharp,” Lind said.James Bertolino is a firefighter who parachuted there for the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He’ll never forget landing in the drop zone and seeing what a Word War II veteran would have seen.It helps pay tribute to the men who carried out one of the most remembered acts of war.Lind says he is proud to be part of it.“This is the last hurrah for many World War II vets,” he said. “I feel privileged and grateful.The anniversary of D-Day is June 6, 2019. 1577

Ellie Kemper doesn't want to call the ending of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" "bittersweet."The star told CNN the show wrapped filming at the end of June."We were filming the fourth season and we found out as we were filming it that it would be the final season," Kemper said. "In streaming age, that is actually like a fully lived life and feels like we had a lot of episodes given the world we live in now. Each year, an estimated 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide, with billions ending up as litter. In an effort to change those statistics, a college student is turning one of the world’s biggest wastes into a way to save lives for those living on the streets. “Me and my mom have lived through this," says Nataani Silversmith, who is homeless. "Sometimes our signs say 'blankets,' not even 'spare change.'”While blankets can help protect people from Mother Nature’s fury, there’s nothing as strong as a mother’s love for her child. “My life, I would give my life for my son,” says Nataani's mother, Lily Silversmith. When Lily saw her son cold and shivering on the streets of Salt Lake City, they had to find some way to keep dry and stay warm. “There were times when the cardboard would get soaking wet, but these would still be great, just fine, sturdy as can be,” Nataani says, pointing to a mattress made from recycled plastic bags. “And they would dry off in about an hour, rainstorm, no matter what.” Nataani is referring to Bags to Beds, a product from a pending non-profit that turns plastic grocery bags into sleeping mats.“They didn’t give us a dime and we didn’t ask for one. They gave it to us,” Nataani says about his experience with Bags to Beds. “Thank you, Bags to Beds. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank for saving me and my mom’s lives.”Bags to Beds started at the University of Utah campus, where a now medical student had the idea of turning plastic bags into beds. “I found out about how many people freeze to death in Salt Lake specifically every year; it’s over 100 people who freeze each year sleeping outside," says Kaitlin McLean, creator of Bags to Beds. "And I couldn’t wrap my head around that."McLean started this project as a way to reduce waste, while also finding a way to help the homeless. Already finishing and handing out more than 100 Bags to Beds, McLean’s hopes to have another 100 ready by this winter. “Our goal is to make it so these resources are so widely available," she says. "That if a person needs a bed they can get a bed and to also reduce waste to the point where we don’t have plastic bags in waterways and killing animals." 2204

CINCO RANCH, Texas – Investigators say a 29-year-old man was shot and killed by intruders who broke into his suburban Houston home.The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office says Brenton Estorffe was killed early Wednesday at his home in Cinco Ranch, a community 26 miles west of Houston.Sheriff Troy Nehls says Estorffe told a 911 operator that someone had broken a window in the back of his house. The man confronted the two intruders and was shot. The intruders then fled."The father woke up and confronted apparently two individuals, at which time there was some gunshots that were fired and the homeowner, a white male, is deceased inside the residence," said Nehls.Nehls says Estorffe didn't appear to be armed. His wife and two young children were not injured."It's sad, sad," said Nehls. "We have a homeowner now here in Fort Bend County who is no longer with us, and the father of two small children. Breaks your heart."Relatives said on social media that Estorffe was an Australian native. No arrests have been made and investigators haven't established a motive."It's a little unusual to have, not saying it doesn't happen but it's a little unusual for guys that are wanting to break into a home to steal a television or something to break into a house at midnight," said Nehls. Ed Guzman was the very first person in his Mexican immigrant family to attend college.“Entered in fall of ’95, graduated in spring of ’99,” Guzman says. “I was a history major at Stanford.” Stanford University is among the list of schools William Rick Singer is accused of helping parents pay their way into in a large college admission scheme, which was uncovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.The news angered people everywhere, including Guzman, who says it wasn’t easy getting into Stanford.“I still remember my father, him asking for advances on his salary because it was, well ‘how do we pay for this?’” Guzman recalls.Financial aid, scholarships, and his parents scraping by paved the way toward Guzman’s success, which is why he was left shaking his head after hearing of the news of the “biggest college admissions scam in history.”“I just was astonished because there was such an element of like entitlement, when there are those of us who just work so hard just to even get a whiff of it,” Guzman says.The vice president of the National Association for College Admissions, Stefanie Niles, says this extreme case of bribery boils down to upholding ethics and integrity for all parties involved in the admissions process.“Certainly, there’s more to learn about what happened and what exactly went on, and I know this will continue to raise issues and discussion within the higher education community and beyond for certainly weeks, months if not years to come,” Niles says.Guzman hopes those involved are held accountable.“I guess the potential good thing that could come out of this is that people will look at the processes a lot more closely, because it appears that it can be easily manipulated,” Guzman says.Authorities say 50 people, including actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, took part in the scheme that involved either cheating on standardized tests or bribing college coaches to accept students as college athletes. Many of the students accepted as athletes never even played that sport, according to charging documents.“I know that there’s probably frustration out there amongst families that individuals with wealth could get away with this,” Niles says.The alleged orchestrater of the scheme, William Rick Singer, pleaded guilty Tuesday to four charges. 2309
