SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Friday identified a man and his mother who died in a murder-suicide in Borrego Springs.Deputies responding to a request for a welfare check Wednesday morning found the bodies of Corey Sides, 43, and Ann Sides, 71, at their home in the 2900 block of Double O Road.Investigators determined that Corey Sides shot Ann Sides before turning the gun on himself, according to sheriff's officials.A neighbor reported she hadn't seen the mother or her son since last Friday, Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in a series of residential burglaries and auto thefts in El Cajon was arrested Thursday.Davon Lee, 20, was driving a vehicle stolen during one of the home- invasion thefts when San Diego police took him into custody Thursday afternoon, El Cajon police Lt. Kevin MacArthur said.Lee, an El Cajon resident, is suspected of committing seven burglaries in the East County city in recent weeks.In each case, the intruder entered an occupied home through an open door or window, located car keys inside and then stole a vehicle from the premises, MacArthur said. 591

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A United Airlines flight scheduled to take off from San Diego International Airport was diverted from the runway just before departure Friday due to an undisclosed mechanical issue with one of the plane's engines.Flight 478 was scheduled to take off for Denver shortly before noon, but was recalled while on the airport's taxiway. The plane was safely escorted back to the airport's terminal and the issue occurred at low speed, according to United.``The aircraft safely returned to the gate and customers deplaned normally,'' a United spokesperson said in a statement. ``We are making arrangements to get our customers to their final destination as soon as possible.''Roughly 120 passengers were aboard the flight. United and San Diego International did not disclose the plane's model, and information on a future flight to Denver was not immediately available. 888

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A proposal to add a fenced-in, off-leash dog park and walking trails at Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park was vetted Thursday by the San Diego City Council's Environment Committee, which unanimously voted to send to the full council.The committee considered two options for an amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan, which guides future development of the area. Either option would update Fiesta Island, a partially undeveloped area of the park, by adding new amenities and park area to the island's southwest section.The committee ultimately chose the plan dubbed "option B," which reserves much of the island's southwest area for a fenced-in, off-leash dog park and also includes parking areas and walking trails.Option A would have allocated much of the southwest area for a fenced- in, off-leash dog park but would have also included a non-motorized boat launching area along the water, a road extension, larger parking facilities and a designated swimming beach for residents.The Fiesta Island amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan has been in development for roughly two years. Committee attendees, including members of the Fiesta Island Dog Owners group, overwhelmingly stated their support for option B.City Councilman Scott Sherman said his office received roughly 30 calls and more than 300 emails in support of option B, due in part of members of FIDO posting his office's contact information. City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno also expressed appreciation for the public support for option B, particularly among dog owners."I am confident that city staff will be able to find a permanent location for non-motorized personal watercraft in other locations in Mission Bay Park," Moreno said. "But I don't think we need to destroy the experience of thousands and thousands and thousands of dog owners who use Fiesta Island right now in order to do so."Option B also received support from former City Council members Donna Frye, Sherri Lightner and Lorie Zapf."It's important to preserve as much open space as possible," City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said of option B. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at 1525 Fourth Ave.Rev. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. Attendees will receive a free hot breakfast, free clothes and children will receive free gifts.The event begins at 7 a.m. at 6125 Imperial Ave. According to Harris, the breakfast is open to the public, but foster families, low-income residents, homeless residents and military veterans are all encouraged to attend.
