HANGZHOU, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) said Sunday the country will step up water conservation infrastructure construction to better cope with natural disasters.The central government has allocated over 80 billion yuan (11.7 billion U.S. dollars) this year for water conservation projects. Total investment in the sector is expected to hit 200 billion yuan, MWR vice minister Jiao Yong said at a work conference Sunday in Hangzhou, capital city of the eastern Zhejiang Province.Jiao said water conservation facilities in China would be expanded while insuring the quality of the projects.Meanwhile, repair and maintenance work on reservoirs in poor condition will be boosted this year, said Sun Jichang, a senior MRW official.China needed to reinforce a total of 6,240 faulty reservoirs in the three years to 2010. So far, only 2,000 of them have been reinforced as insufficient local funding or possible misuse of funds has delayed the work, Sun said.Local water authorities will be rushed as the Ministry is requiring all reservoir repair work be finished by the end of the year.

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland here on Tuesday marked their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties at an evening reception.Addressing the reception, Wang Gang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the two countries had become "reliable partners of cooperation."Finnish President Tarja Halonen echoed Wang, saying information and environmental concerns had become important areas of cooperation.The president said she was leading a delegation of business people to China to build links between the two countries. She said she looked forward to a clean tech workshop slated for Wednesday.Halonen arrived at Beijing Tuesday morning, kicking off her six-day visit to China. ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese embassy official Tuesday called on an official of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to donate 30,000 U.S. dollars on behalf of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS) to assist the residents affected by the landslide in northern Pakistan early this year.Muhammad Ilyas Khan, PRCS secretary general, asked Yao Jing, counselor of the Chinese embassy to Pakistan, to convey his appreciation to the CRCS for its generous donation to Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan due to the landslide in January, 2010.He said that Chinese friends always extend assistance to Pakistan in difficult times and Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China.At present, the local government and PRCS are working hard to provide relief to the villages. The government is also trying to control the damage and tackle with the challenge caused by the lake in the area.On January 4, a serious landslide occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan and formed a huge barrier lake. The slide blocked over 20,000 local residents in Upper Hunza from outside. The Pakistani government is conducting the rescue and relief work . On January 19, at the request of the Pakistani government, the Chinese side made special arrangements to open the Kunjirap border and facilitate the purchase of relief goods from China and its clearance.The China Road and Bridge Corporation, which is conducting the project of upgradation of the Karakoram Highway, has also provided engineering consultations and equipment to help the Pakistani side to deal with the problem.
