KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After more than a century embedded beneath the paint, researchers discovered a grasshopper beneath the brushstrokes in a Vincent Van Gogh painting at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum.Paintings Conservator Mary Schafer discovered the tiny grasshopper in the lower foreground of the landscape while working under a microscope. According to a news release from the Nelson, Schafer and other researchers hoped the grasshopper could be used to determine a more specific date on the painting.“It is not unusual to find insects or plant material in a painting that was completed outdoors,” Schafer said. “But in this case, we were curious if the grasshopper could be used to identify the particular season in which this work was painted.”Unfortunately, entomologists were unable to date the painting, but could determine the grasshopper had died before landing on Van Gogh’s canvas.Additional research on Van Gogh’s “Olive Trees” is underway. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul mother is worried the remote learning designed to keep her daughter safe during the pandemic, is making her sick.When 11-year-old Amelia started the school year with distance learning in mid-August, her daily computer screen time went from one to two hours, to seven to eight hours. Her mother Renee says Amelia's school has since offered a hybird option. Now Amerila does remote learning three days a week. Around the beginning of October, Renee says her daughter started complaining about her eyes."She started to come to me with, 'My eyes are tired. I want to scratch my eyes,'" said Renee.Within the past week, those symptoms have gotten worse."She started saying she was lightheaded, uncomfortable in front of the screen. Started feeling constant headaches," said Renee.Renee shared details on a neighborhood Facebook page and learned her daughter wasn't alone."Found out a lot of community members are facing the same challenges with their children," said Renee.Locally and across the county, as school districts have turned to remote learning and all that uninterrupted screen time, complaints of visual fatigue have continued to grow."It's frustrating. I feel helpless. I also want her to be healthy and stay focused. I also don't her to fall behind. She loves school," said Renee.Amelia's pediatrician prescribed ibuprofen, which hasn't helped. A few days ago, Renee purchased blue-light blocking glasses for her daughter. Renee says the eye fatigue has gotten better but the headaches remain.Dr. David Granet, Professor of Ophthalmology & Pediatrics, UC San Diego School of Medicine, offered this advice when it comes to remote learning:"Health problems connected with spending many hours at a time or in a day looking at a computer monitor or TV screen is a global issue, especially where schools are currently shut down and students are spending class hours online. There are immediate and longer-term effects.First, there is the issue of eyestrain. Looking at something up close, like a monitor, requires effort. The muscles of the eyes have to work hard to focus. Younger people may have a greater ability to do that, but it still takes effort, which can lead to headaches, blurry vision when the muscles tire, or dry and itchy eyes because you’re not blinking enough.Then there is the issue of how you’re looking at the screen. Are you hunched over a laptop? Hanging your head out and forward puts a great strain on the neck and back. It creates posture issues.A simple part of the remedy involves the 20-20-20 rule: After 20 minutes of looking at a screen, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. That gives your eyes time to relax and recover. This is one of the times when we want kids to gaze outside the window! There are many ways to remember to do this, such as setting a timer or bookmarking ahead in an e-book.Kids need to get up and away from screens to help prevent longer-term issues. For example, there is a growing epidemic of myopia, near-sightedness caused by too many years spent staring at close objects, like computer screens. It’s happening around the world.Excessive screen time is also linked to rising rates of childhood obesity, impaired sleep quality, and behavioral changes. It’s critical that students spend considerable time away from screens, outside, being physically active." 3389

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mother is outraged after seeing a photo of her 7-month-old son tied up in a sleep sack at day care.Tanya, who asked her last name not be used because of her job with the government, said she got phone call from the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) in late March. The department told her it was investigating a report involving a photo of her son at Miss Anne's Daycare in Leavenworth, Kansas.The DCF worker couldn’t send her the photo, so Tanya drove directly to the DCF offices in Leavenworth.“It was a picture of him in a sleep sack with his arms bound down and the sleeves of the sleep sack tied to the back with a ponytail holder, and he was laid face down with his face pretty much in the corner,” she said, shaking. Tayna drove directly from the DCF office that day to the day care, picked up her son, and he hasn’t been back.Tanya said she’s not really an emotional person, but the situation has been difficult.“You know, I was in the military for 22 years. I don’t shake easily…” she said. “This shook me to my core.”She wasn’t the only person to get a phone call.Deirdre Engle said she got a call, too. Someone had reported her daughter, Elora, being put down the same way — in a sleep sack, face down, with the sack pulled tight with a hair band. Engle said DCF had a photo and was investigating. “First, I thought there's no way that's my baby, she looks so small! She's laying on her tummy like she always does, but she looks uncomfortable. She's tied up. My baby is tied up," Engle said in a phone call. "She can't roll over, she can't sit up, if she were to cough up any of her formula, she'd choke. I got scared for her. She's been at this day care since she was 5 weeks old. I've trusted these people for her entire life and I was wrong,” wrote Engle.Engle pulled her daughter from the day care March 27. She has not taken her child back to the facility.Another mother, Jennifer New, also got a call from DCF in late March. According to her, DCF assured New her daughter wasn’t in any photos they’d received, but they wanted her to check on things and report back.When reached for comment, Miss Anne's referred Scripps station KSHB to a statement they’d posted on Facebook earlier in the day on April 17.The Department of Children and Families said it could not comment specifically on investigations. However, DCF did say it follows the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that babies be put to sleep on their backs.The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released the following statementt:  2626

JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Bernardino County couple has been arrested after authorities said they kept their three children in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.Sheriff's Department deputies were conducting an area check Wednesday afternoon in the 7000 block of Sunfair Road when they located a trailer that appeared abandoned. A large rectangular box made of plywood was also located on the property.Upon inspection, deputies found there was no electricity or running water and several large holes, mounds of trash, and human feces on the property.Police said the parents, identified as Mona Kirk, 51, and Daniel Panico, 73, did not provide their three children, ages 11-, 13-, and 14-years-old, with enough food either.About 30-40 cats were also found roaming freely inside the trailer and on the property.Kirk and Panico were arrested and charged with willful cruelty to a child in lieu of 0,000 bail.The three children have been transported into the care of San Bernardino County Children and Family Services. 1061

Job posting site Indeed.com is reporting new data that shows what many job seekers have felt, there are 20 percent fewer job openings posted now compared to a year ago.Indeed’s data shows 2020’s job posting trends were on track until about March 15, and then plunged to a low point in early May. On May 1 of this year, there were almost 40 percent fewer open jobs listed compared to May 1, 2019.The job market has shown positive signs in the last few months, with increases in the number of open jobs actively recruiting in June and July, according to Indeed. In the beginning of August, there were 18 percent fewer job postings compared to a year ago, and by the end of August, that spread had grown to 20 percent fewer job postings. 742
