September Buys, a teacher in Michigan, says she doesn't really like garage sales, and that should tell you just how far she will go to help her students this year.Buys, an art teacher at Crossroads Middle School in Grand Rapids, said she was feeling helpless about all the uncertainty surrounding the school year-- and decided to channel her frustration into cleaning."I just started cleaning out my closet, because that felt better, just to let some things go," she said. "I made a pile, and then I moved onto the girls’ closet, and then I moved onto the toy room, and just this pile grew and grew and grew.”The idea came to her to hold a garage sale to give away the items. She also reached out to the community on Facebook, asking if others had items they wanted to contribute as well.Instead of selling what's been collected, Buys asked people to donate art supplies or purchase items off the Amazon wishlist she created to help her students.“I think it’s really, really important for people to connect with each other and be kind to each other and if you have something extra, why not share it? Things are things… I think what’s more important for me right now is to make sure that my students are cared for and that they have the things they need to feel like they can express what’s going on, they can kind of get some of that stuff out, and the more materials and stuff I have for my students, the better.”Buys plans to take all the art supplies to create individual 'art kits' for her students."We always need help with purchasing supplies – but this year especially, whether the kids are at home or whether they’re in person, they’re not going to be able to share supplies in the same way. I can’t take one package of pencils and put it in the middle of the table for kids to share anymore. Smash Mouth says they've received hate mail from fans after taking part in a concert during an event that's since been linked to the spread of more than 100 cases of COVID-19.The band performed an Aug. 9 concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in front of a closely-grouped crowd. Many of those in attendance were not wearing masks. During the performance, lead singer Steve Harwell was heard saying, "f*** that Covid s***."In the weeks since the event, at least 103 cases of COVID-19 have been linked directly to the Sturgis rally. And while it's unclear how many of those cases (if any) are linked directly to the Smash Mouth concert, the band has faced criticism since its performance.Earlier this week, the band posted a video of "recent fan mail" that they've received. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A man who was fatally stabbed in Spring Valley on Friday, and the woman arrested on suspicion of his murder, have been identified.Manuel Castro, 41, was found Friday just after 11:30 p.m. at his apartment in the 3500 block of James Circle, after a reported stabbing. He was rushed to the hospital with a stab wound to the chest, where he died shortly after arriving.Castro's live-in girlfriend, Anielka Arbizu, 37, was found at the scene when deputies arrived. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Sunday, Arbizu was charged with one count of murder at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility.Sheriff's deputies don't suspect any other suspects in the case. 727

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead after a fire tore through an East County home early Saturday.The fire broke out just before 3 a.m. at a residence located on Demona Place in Spring Valley. Fire fighters responded and were told by a neighbor that a 50-year-old man may still be inside the home. San Diego Sheriff's deputies tried to make contact with anyone inside, but nobody answered.Crews were able to force their way into the residence and begin extinguishing the fire, which had fully engulfed the home.One man was found inside the home and pulled from the living room area.SDSO says the man's injuries were unknown, but he likely suffered from smoke inhalation. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.Bomb Arson investigated were requested to the scene, but the origin and cause of the blaze were not known Saturday. 873

Singer and actress Janelle Monae confirmed her sexual orientation for the first time in a new interview."Being a black queer woman in America ... someone who has been in relationships with both men and women -- I consider myself to be a free-** m******f***er," she said in a Rolling Stone cover story published online Thursday.Monae, a six-time Grammy nominee who has also starred in films such as "Moonlight" and "Hidden Figures," says she's still learning about her sexuality."But then later I read about pansexuality and I was like, 'Oh, these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to leaning more about myself," she said.Monae's sexual orientation has been a source of gossip in the past. Her Rolling Stone interview marks the first time she's confirmed that she's bisexual.
