DANA POINT, Calif. (KGTV) -- A small plane made an emergency landing on a Southern California beach Saturday afternoon, according to the associated press. The Orange County Fire Authority says the Cessna airplane made the landing on Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. The pilot took off from John Wayne when the plane lost power. The pilot landed on an empty stretch of sand. No one was injured, according to fire officials. 432

Lederman always turned to paintbrushes and a canvas when things got tough. "I have been drawing and writing since I was really little."She turned her passion into profit when she became a published cartoonist, but she always had an eye for writing and books."I've always written stories and I've always wanted to get it out there, and this is kind of an interesting time to get this out there because there are a lot of families who are having a really hard time," Lederman described.She pivoted from human to something more serious and recently published a series of children's books about COVID-19."I have a friend who has two little boys in Brooklyn, New York and she shared photos of the rainbows in the windows. That seemed like a logical storyline for the silver lining and sense of connection we have during the fact we're all isolated." It inspired her first book titled 'Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story'. After that, came 'Masks'."It's about a mom who sews masks for essential workers and I think everyone's been thinking about that and seeing all the work everyone's been doing," Lederman said.Her book was recently published by TBR, a non-profit organization that supported multilingual children's books. Lederman's books were published in spanish, japanese and hebrew to name a few."It's really wonderful to be able to have these stories in my first picture books published in many languages so we can connect people during this time from all over." 1629

DETROIT (AP) — Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling over 591,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix a brake fluid leak that could cause engine fires. The recalls cover more than 440,000 Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Also covered are 151,000 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015. The affiliated automakers say brake fluid can leak inside a hydraulic control unit for the anti-lock brakes, possibly causing an electrical short that can lead to fires. Kia’s recall will start Oct. 15, while Hyundai’s will start Oct. 23. Dealers for both companies will inspect the control units for leaks and replace them if needed at no cost to owners. 709

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed an executive order granting convicted felons the right to vote, ending Iowa’s place as the only remaining state to broadly deny voting rights to felons.The Republican governor signed the order Wednesday after promising in June that she would take such action.Reynolds says she’ll continue to press the Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment restoring felon voting rights, which couldn't be reversed by a future governor. She proposed that last year but couldn’t get Republican state senators to support it.The executive order restores the right to vote for Iowans who have already completed their felony sentences. It requires residents to complete any prison, probation, parole, or special sentence.The order excludes automatic restoration for more serious crimes, such as murder, requiring those people to seek individual restoration but does not require repayment of victim restitution before they could vote."Today we take a significant step forward in acknowledging the importance of redemption, second chances and the need to address inequalities in our justice system,” said Reynolds. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of society and the free republic in which we live. When someone serves their sentence, they should have their right to vote restored automatically. We’re going to continue to advocate for a constitutional amendment and make this major milestone permanent. DETROIT (AP) — Walmart is teaming up with the General Motors’ autonomous vehicle unit to test driverless delivery in Arizona. The companies say battery powered Chevrolet Volt vehicles will begin deliveries in Scottsdale early next year. At first they’ll have human backup drivers who will monitor the cars and help to deliver packages to doors. But Ray Wert, spokesman at GM’s Cruise autonomous vehicle unit, says they’ll eventually move to fully autonomous deliveries. Walmart says customers will be able to place an order and it will be delivered contact-free by a Cruise vehicle. The retail giant says it’s one of several autonomous vehicle pilot projects designed to chart a new roadmap for retail sales.Wert says the testing with Walmart will start small and gradually ramp up to more vehicles. He did not know how many Volts would be used at the beginning.The company says it started an express delivery service in April and now has it in over 2,800 stores that reach more than 65% of U.S. households. 1015
