House lawmakers have passed a bill that makes animal cruelty a federal felony. The so- called "PACT Act" specifically bans crushing, burning, drowning and impaling animals, among other things. It would also allow officials to go after suspected animal abusers who cross state lines. But according to its co-sponsor, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., it would also close a big loophole. His office says the bill would specifically ban animal cruelty recorded on video.Previous laws have de-legalized creating and selling those videos, but not the acts of cruelty in them.Another co-sponsor of the bill, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., says the legislation sends a clear message that our society does not accept animal cruelty.Violations of the bill could lead to prison for up to seven years. 796

Federal prosecutors in New York are scrutinizing tens of thousands of documents relating to Donald Trump's inauguration in a sign that the investigation into the committee's finances is advancing. The President's Inaugural Committee handed over the cache of documents over the course of several weeks in response to a wide-ranging subpoena seeking documents, records, and communications concerning the inaugural's finances, vendors, and donors sent in February by the US attorney's office with the Southern District of New York. The last set of documents was produced within the last month, people familiar with the matter said. The end of the document production indicates the investigation is moving into the next stage. Authorities are investigating whether any of the record 7 million in donations for the inaugural was misspent, used to improperly benefit certain individuals, or came from foreign donors in violation of campaign finance laws that prohibit foreign money in US elections, people familiar with the inquiry said. The ongoing investigation is one of several into Trump's 1101

Feeding your dog a raw meat-based diet is seen by some owners as a healthier and more natural alternative to commercially available pet food. But researchers warned in a new study that many of the raw meat products for dogs they looked at contained high levels of bacteria that could put both people and animals at risk of infection. The researchers, who were based in Sweden, analyzed 60 frozen packs of raw dog food made by 10 manufacturers in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and the UK for bacteria that could pose a health risk.Thirty-one packs contained levels of bacteria that exceeded the threshold set by the European Union, including salmonella, which was found in four packs, and 701
