On Wednesday, Kaepernick recognized the three year anniversary by taking to his Twitter account saying, “Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Humane Society and District Attorney’s office are teaming up to encourage people to report suspected animal cruelty. According to the Humane Society, animal cruelty is one of the earliest and most dramatic indicators that someone may be developing a pattern of seeking power and control by abusing others. The Humane Society says when animals in the home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the home may be in danger. “Often times when animals are being abused, people are being abused too,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “That’s why it’s so important to report animal cruelty and neglect when you see it.”Anyone who wants to report animal cruelty is asked to call the Humane Society at 619-299-7012. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is still dealing with a convalescent plasma shortage. The plasma can be used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19, but donations from gay men could be turned away if they don’t meet certain requirements.The donation restrictions received national attention after talk show host Andy Cohen says he was turned away from donating the plasma for being gay.The local blood bank explained the restrictions to ABC 10News. The blood bank’s chief medical officer, Dr. Mark Edmunds, says the restrictions are in place by the FDA. He says the FDA actually eased some of the restrictions in April of this year, which was an update from a 2015 change. The FDA says the guidelines exist to protect the safety of the blood and plasma supply.In April, the FDA provided the updated guidelines to allow for a larger donor pool in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Before the guideline modifications, a gay man could only donate blood if he abstained from sex for a year. Now, the abstinence time frame is three months.Similar changes were made for people who recently received tattoos or piercings or for travel and residences deferrals related to malaria.Dr. Edmunds says there are studies happening right now to see if and how the donor pool can be expanded even further.The blood bank adopted the FDA’s new regulations on July 31st. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday, the City of San Diego invites all children to play in the mud.In a celebration of nature and friendship, “International Mud Day” encourages kids to get dirty together. First celebrated between Australia and Nepal in 2009, the holiday has spread to cities across the world.Saturday will mark San Diego’s 2nd Mud Day celebration. All children and their families are invited to Crown Point Park in Mission Bay from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.After a successful celebration in 2018, the City has expanded the event to include obstacle courses, nature crafts, and more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three East San Diego County school districts are moving back to distance learning because of this weekend's harsh weather.The San Diego County Office of Education says schools in Julian Union Elementary School District and Warner Unified School District will move to distance learning on Monday. The county made move due to forecasted snow Sunday night and freezing temperatures on Monday.SDCOE added that Julian Union High School will have a snow day without distance learning with a scheduled makeup day at the end of the school year."The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the county said in its announcement.The National Weather Service forecasts the Julian and Pine Valley areas will see one to two inches of snow overnight at 4,500 to 5,000 feet, and lows of 23 to 33 degrees. Monday, the high is expected to hover between 46 and 52 degrees before reaching the mid-50s on Tuesday.The mountain region should hit low- to mid-60s on Saturday, according to NWS. 1058
