(AP) — The parents of a mentally ill man fatally shot by an off-duty officer in a California Costco store remain hospitalized and their lawyer says neither is well enough to be interviewed by police.Attorney Dale Galipo tells the Los Angeles Times that Paola French was in a coma and in critical condition as of Wednesday. Her husband, Russell French, was in serious condition.Police in the city of Corona say detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and evaluate video and forensic evidence from the store.Thirty-two-year-old Kenneth French was shot and killed last week by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer. The officer says French attacked him without provocation. CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home.She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said.But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County.In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher.As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said.She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived.When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. CINCINNATI, Ohio — An Ohio man who falsely claimed in 2019 to be a long-missing boy received a mandatory two-year federal prison sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft.U.S. District Court Judge Michael Barrett gave Brian Rini, 25, credit for time served in jail, where Rini has been detained for nearly 21 months. That means Rini will be released from prison in about three and a half months.In April 2019, Rini told federal agents he was Timmothy Pitzen, an Aurora, Illinois, boy who disappeared at age 6 in 2011.Rini claimed he was also a sex trafficking victim who escaped from his captors.His lies prompted a massive federal, state and local investigation and raised the hopes of the Pitzen family, only to see them crushed again when the FBI soon exposed Rini's lie."I just want to say I'm sorry for what I've done and that I wish that I could just take it back," Rini said during a video hearing in Cincinnati. "I'm sorry for the family."Rini has twice before made bogus claims about being a juvenile sex trafficking victim and only admitted to the hoax this time after being confronted with the results of a DNA test, according to the FBI."He can't keep doing this. This is no way to live his own life and he really needs to think of the people that he hurts when he does this," said Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Healey, who prosecuted the case.Healey said Rini's lies prompted a major criminal investigation that pulled important law enforcement resources away from other cases, and caused "an enormous amount of unnecessary pain to the victim's family.""He needs to understand that when he tells lies like this it does cause damage. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and comments mocking migrant deaths in a secret Facebook group for agents and employees are "completely inappropriate," the head of the U.S. Border Patrol said Monday.The sexist posts published by ProPublica came in response to Monday's visit by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, including Democrats Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Veronica Escobar of Texas, who toured a Border Patrol facility near El Paso, where attorneys said they had found migrant children living in fetid, filthy conditions.Some of the Facebook posts were graphic, doctored images of Ocasio-Cortez; including one that shows a smiling President Donald Trump forcing her head toward his crotch. Other comments refer to Ocasio-Cortez and Escobar as "hoes," and one member encouraged agents to throw a "burrito at these bitches."The lawyers' report about the poor conditions at the facility in Clint came as the Trump administration has been managing a massive influx of Central American migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border that has overwhelmed facilities. Ocasio-Cortez raised hackles last month when she tweeted: "This administration has established concentration camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrations, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying."Her tweet set off a firestorm of criticism from GOP lawmakers and others over her use of "concentration camps." City of San Diego workers on the taxpayer dime were doubling the hours worked on their timecards and getting paid for it anyway. The revelation is part of a damaging new audit set to be released Friday. "Quite frankly, we're appalled," Johnnie Perkins, a city deputy chief operating officer, said in a press conference called Thursday. The audit found the a unit of 17 workers in a unit of public utilities department were working an average 3.6 hours per day, but putting eight hours on their timecards - and supervisors were approving them. The unit is charged with replacing faulty cement water meter covers and water meter boxes at homes and business across the city of San Diego. "We need to make sure that we're changing what our expectations are not just for those that are on the front line repairing our lids and boxes," Perkins said, "but for our midlevel and senior managers, what do we expect in terms of how they are going to be evaluated or held accountable for their performance, or in this case, lack thereof?"The investigation comes just months after City Auditor Eduardo Luna's department found that the public utilities department sent erroneously high water bills to nearly 3,000 San Diego families. Perkins said reforms are currently being installed. The announcement came one day after city public utilities director Vic Bianes announced his retirement, effective Thursday. Matt Vespi, an assistant director in the finance department, takes over on an interim basis.The city plans to have a permanent replacement by the end of the year.   In a statement, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the public utilities department needs to earn back the trust of its customers."The Mayor has called for sweeping reforms that include looking into every aspect of the department’s operations and changing how things are done to better serve the public," he said. In the case of the inflated timecards, Perkins declined to say how much was lost, what the workers earned, and exactly how long it was going on.
