WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. remains in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic with more than 8 million cases, spiking in multiple states, like Montana.“There are many, many people not taking this seriously and not playing their part in mitigating the spread of this virus,” said Trisha Gardner, Cascade City-County, Montana health officer.Now, there are concerns that getting COVID-19 could land you in the same category as someone with diabetes or high-blood pressure – having a preexisting condition.“This has flown under the radar to some extent,” said Dr. Eric Schneider, senior vice president of policy and research at The Commonwealth Fund, a century-old foundation that examines health policy in the U.S.Since COVID-19 can have lingering effects on people who contract it, Dr. Schenider says there’s a possibility it could be labeled as a preexisting condition.So, who decides that?“The preexisting condition language really traces to the insurance industry,” Dr. Schneider said, “really on a case by case basis, which diseases, which conditions, will actually count.”That hasn’t mattered so much lately because the Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – prohibits health insurers from denying people coverage based on preexisting conditions.Next month, though, a case before the U.S. Supreme Court could get Obamacare thrown out.If that happens, there is no official plan yet from either party to replace it, nor to protect people with preexisting conditions.“If the Supreme Court undoes that solution, there will definitely be a need for a new solution,” Dr. Schneider said.How many could be affected?The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says about 133 million people in the country currently have a preexisting condition. The Commonwealth Fund looked at how COVID-19 survivors would affect that number.Researchers excluded people who already had a preexisting condition before contracting the coronavirus, as well as anyone over the age of 65. They found that 3.4 million people who recovered from the coronavirus but never had a preexisting condition before could join the ranks of now having a preexisting condition.What’s more, based on current COVID-19 infection rates, that number is growing in the U.S. by 20,000 people a day.“That number is also tied to how well we control the pandemic,” Dr. Schneider said.So far, no insurance company has indicated it will add COVID-19 as a potential preexisting condition.However, health care policy experts warn it could all come down to what the justices decide about the health care law in next month’s case before the Supreme Court. 2603
WASHINGTON D.C. -- Environmental regulators announced Monday that they will ease emissions standards for cars and trucks, according to the Associated Press.Current regulations from the EPA require vehicles by 2025 to get 36 miles per gallon in real-world driving. Regulators said the reason for the change is that the timeline put in place by the Obama administration wasn’t appropriate and set standards too high.The announcement will affect vehicles for model years 2022 through 2025.The changes could set up a legal battle with California, which has the power to set its own pollution and gas mileage standards.Other states also follow rules set by California and together account for more than a third of the vehicles sold in the U.S. Currently state and federal standards are the same.EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said in a statement Monday that the agency will work with California to finalize new standards.The agency said Monday that regulations set under the Obama administration, "presents challenges for auto manufacturers due to feasibility and practicability, raises potential concerns related to automobile safety, and results in significant additional costs on consumers, especially low-income consumers."Automakers praised the decision, saying current requirements would have cost them billions, raising vehicle prices."This was the right decision, and we support the Administration for pursuing a data-driven effort and a single national program as it works to finalize future standards," said Gloria Bergquist, vice president, communications and public affairs for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, in a statement. Getting medical attention is a first priority but knowing exactly what your health insurance covers is key.“You'd need to know what is in the policy - what is covered and especially what is not covered,” said Ray Farmer, who heads up the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). “If a protest happens to turn violent and include some rioting, I think that would be extremely difficult for an insurance company to prove that those injuries occurred due to an excluded act, even if the policy had such a provision.”Some policies, though, do have exclusions, like if you take part in “illegal acts” or participate in “civil unrest.” How that’s specifically defined would be up to an insurer, but it could range from vandalism and property damage to violating a community’s established curfew, or failing to leave an area if police order you to do so.However, Farmer says there are some things a consumer should be aware of, in the event they are denied coverage for the treatment of injuries sustained during civil unrest. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions.
