SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Temperatures will soar into the triple digits in parts of the San Diego area Friday at the outset of an extreme late-summer heat wave expected to roast the region through the Labor Day weekend.The predicted hot spell and accompanying low humidity and gusty winds out of the east prompted the National Weather Service to issue a "red flag" wildfire warning for the local inland valleys and mountains, effective from 10 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday. The alert signifies a likelihood of critical combustion hazards that can lead to "extreme fire behavior."Air moisture levels will drop to the 15-20% range on Saturday and Sunday with poor overnight recovery, according to meteorologists. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of robbing a taco restaurant in the Mountain View area at gunpoint.It happened shortly before 8:50 p.m. Monday at an eatery on Ocean View Boulevard between South 36th and South 37th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The thief walked up to the counter, pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the register, Buttle said.The clerk complied. The gunman fled out the back door and continued running northbound on South 37th Street with an undisclosed amount of cash, he said.No injuries were reported.The bandit was described as a 5-foot-4 Hispanic man in his 20s with a thin build. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The ride-hailing company Lyft announced an expansion Wednesday of its pilot program at Camp Pendleton that streamlines access to the U.S. Marine Corps base for military members, their families and civilians who work at the military installation.Lyft launched the pilot program in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services last year to make it easier for people living on the base to book a ride with a company like Lyft or Uber, which previously required security clearance to enter the base. The ``Base Mode'' feature is now integrated into the app, automatically matching base residents with eligible drivers.In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid driver's license from any U.S. state. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. We know the hardest-to-count Californians still may be missed or undercounted given the shortened deadline, so it's essential these households complete the form now,'' said Ditas Katague, director of the California Complete Count -- Census 2020.``With two weeks left, our message is loud and clear: Californians need to act and fill out their Census forms,'' Katague added. ``We have just days to secure funding and representation in our state for the next decade.
