SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Twin brothers were arrested in Mexico this week and turned over to U.S. border authorities in connection with a 2013 murder in East San Diego.Anibal and Edward Avila, both 27, were arrested on Friday and charged with the murder of Rafal Robles, 34, five years ago, according to San Diego Police.Police say Robles and another man were found suffering from gunshot wounds in an alley near the 4000 block of 39th Street in the Cooridor neighborhood just before 3 p.m. on April 11, 2013. Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. "We need water to survive. That's one of the things that kids really understand."Four thousand five hundred kids will get the chance to experience the Hydro Station annually. Its located at the Sweetwater Authority's Groundwater Desalination Facility. The Hydro Station is made possible through a partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, Chula Vista Elementary School District and Otay Mesa Water District. There will be an official ribbon-cutting for the learning space this evening at 5 p.m. 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego officials Wednesday named former men’s head basketball coach Lamont Smith as the college employee involved in the campus admissions bribery scandal known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” The initial indictment, released earlier in March, alleged real estate developer Robert Flaxman paid about 0,000 to get his son in the “side door” with the help of a USD coach. Federal documents claim an FBI witness and Smith worked to accept Flaxman’s son, an Industrial Systems Engineer Major, as an athletic recruit, although he did not play basketball. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officers arrested 20 illegal immigrants during a five-day sting, officials reported Friday. The operation, which wrapped up Thursday, was focused on immigrants with a final removal order, criminal convictions, or criminal charges. ICE did not provide details about the locations of the arrests or the names of those targeted.ICE officials said 85 percent of those arrested had prior convictions or charges including drugs, weapons offenses, hit and run crashes, DUI, theft, domestic violence, fraud, and evasion. “Targeted operations like this reflect the vital public service that ERO officers do every day to protect the nation, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border control,” said Field Office Director Gregory Archambeault. “We will continue to conduct similar operations, while seeking to ultimately remove criminal aliens with a final order of removal and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety.” The primary targets of the operation will be removed from the United States, ICE officials said.Enforcement response officers arrested 158,581 immigrants in fiscal year 2018, according to ICE. 90 percent of those arrested had criminal convictions, charges, or previous final orders of removal. 1350

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were killed Tuesday night in two separate crashes on state Route 54 in the Paradise Hills area.At around 9:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said a male driver lost control of his pickup truck and overturned off westbound SR-54 near Reo Drive.According to the CHP, the driver and his three female passengers was ejected. The driver was then run over by a passing vehicle, the CHP said.The driver, who was not identified, was declared dead at the scene. The three women were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.About an hour after the deadly rollover, CHP officials said a Honda CRV slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stopped in the backup traffic on westbound SR-54 caused by the initial wreck.ABC 10News learned a passenger in the CRV died in the crash, but the driver left the scene and has not been located.The Silverado's female driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries.Both crashes are under investigation; the CHP said "alcohol/and or drugs are suspected factors" in the second collision. 1116
