SAN DIEGO (KGTV): San Diego State University may require all students to have the Meningitis-B vaccine beginning in the fall of 2019.The University is in preliminary discussions about the idea after an outbreak made three students sick on campus this fall.A university spokesperson confirmed to 10News that the school is in the very early stages of the idea. A statement from the school says it stems from "continued conversations with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency," and that "the safety and wellbeing of all SDSU students remains the priority."The Cal State University system doesn't require the Meningitis-B vaccine. Their guidelines say that schools only need to "inform incoming freshmen living on-campus about the Meningococcal disease and provide information on available vaccines."However, according to SDSU, "The California State University Office of the Chancellor is engaging in the review and consultation process necessary to update the existing policy." The CSU systemwide policy can be found here.This fall's outbreak was the second instance of the disease in the last four years on campus. In 2014, a student died from Meningitis-B.The disease has similar symptoms to a cold or flu. It can be fatal. In other cases, people who get the disease suffer brain damage, hearing loss or the loss of limbs, fingers or toes.During the most recent outbreak, the University supplied antibiotics to students who were in close contact with the ones who'd been infected. The school also held vaccination clinics on campus.Some students had to get a second vaccination after the school discovered that several doses of the vaccine weren't properly stored. Those vaccines were administered by Walgreens, who also was responsible for their storage. SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California.The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. San Diego will seek to invalidate its landmark pension law, a citizens' initiative 65 percent of voters approved in 2012.The City Council voted 6-3 Monday to go to court to invalidate 2012's Proposition B, which switched most new hires from a pension to a 401(k) style plan. The decision came after multiple courts ruled the city skipped a key step in the campaign. The courts said then-Mayor Jerry Sanders' involvement meant the city needed to meet and confer with unions, but didn't. The courts required the city to make employees whole plus a seven percent penalty, but didn't invalidate the law. The city will now to go to court along side its employee associations to get it off the books. "It's illogical for the city to believe that having broken the law in order to get Prop B into the charter that you should be allowed to keep it in there," said attorney Ann Smith, representing the Municipal Employees Association. Firefighter John Hernandez II said he's seen a number of his colleagues leave for other departments, which offer better benefits - namely a pension."In my line of work, we can't work as long as most people, and that's why we need pensions," he said. But Councilman Scott Sherman, who voted to protect Prop B, said ultimately going back to pensions could cripple the city. "Every single year we make a 0 million minimum payment on our pension debt from the old system that too us to that point, and now they're asking us to go right back to that system," he said.Sherman said it's low unemployment, not a lack of benefits, leading to the city's worker retention issues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.  The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.  A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.  She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.  Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy.   603
