Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Wednesday that the "breaking point has arrived this week" for the US immigration system.Speaking from El Paso, Texas, the head of the US border security agency said that on Monday, CBP encountered the highest total number of migrants in years, with more than 4,000 in a single day, the vast majority of which were apprehensions of people illegally crossing the border. That number was broken again on Tuesday.McAleenan said the agency is on pace to apprehend and encounter "over 100,000" migrants this month. Ninety percent of those are expected to be for illegal border crossings."March will be the highest month since 2008," he said.In March 2019 alone, almost 40,000 children will come into CBP's custody, McAleenan said, adding that the "potential for a tragic incident" during a border crossing or in overwhelmed agency facilities is "clear and present."He said the danger increases as the weather gets hotter. In December, two Guatemalan children have died after they were detained with their fathers after crossing the border. For months, administration officials have been warning that the changing demographics -- more families, children and a majority of Central American arriving -- were causing strain on resources, but the overall numbers of people arriving at the border are now set to reach levels not seen in a decade. The last time the monthly number of border arrests was above 90,000 was in the spring of 2008. During the unaccompanied minor crisis of 2014, the highest monthly total number reached 61,357."This stark and increasing shift to more vulnerable populations, combined with the overwhelming numbers, and inadequate capacity to detain families and children at ICE and Health and Human Services, respectively, is creating a humanitarian crisis," said McAleenan.CBP is taking over 60 migrants to the hospital each day and is encountering people with severe medical conditions, according to the commissioner. For instance, in the past four days, CBP has seen infants with fevers of 105 degrees and a 2-year-old suffering from seizures in the desert. 2146
DENVER — Twelve inches of snow on the first weekend of summer. That sounds extreme, even by Colorado standards, but that was the 24-hour snowfall estimate Saturday morning for pockets of the northern central mountains, 236
DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Once they jump out of the plane, they may feel light as air, but they’ll be wearing … gear that weight more than 100 pounds.”The “fear keeps you sharp,” Lind said.James Bertolino is a firefighter who parachuted there for the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He’ll never forget landing in the drop zone and seeing what a Word War II veteran would have seen.It helps pay tribute to the men who carried out one of the most remembered acts of war.Lind says he is proud to be part of it.“This is the last hurrah for many World War II vets,” he said. “I feel privileged and grateful. The anniversary of D-Day is June 6, 2019. 1577
Dry shampoo has increasingly become a beauty staple for people, but there's something you should know: those aerosol cans are primed for explosion when stored improperly, and a mom and daughter had to learn the hard way.Christine Debrecht took to social media Thursday, Sept. 19, to warn others after her daughter's car ended up with a hole in the roof because a can of dry shampoo exploded inside. The dry shampoo was left in the middle console of her daughter's car, she said on Facebook. The lid of the console was closed."It was hot yesterday and the can exploded," 581
