SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some long-time roller derby kids are upset after Skateworld management announced their Youth Roller Derby program was cut. Many of these kids were instrumental in the "Save Skateworld" campaign in April. When Skateworld was on the verge of being turned into a big box store, they were there. "We got out of school the day of the City Council meeting," mother, Meadow Beidler said. Armed with their skates and signs, dozens of roller derby kids convinced San Diego City Council to vote to save Skateworld on April 8, 2019. "We really thank the kids for coming out and making their signs," Skateworld general manager, Brett Stang said. His father Gary Stang started the rink in 1975. It has been a Linda Vista institution ever since. Earlier this year, when a developer shared plans to turn Skateworld into a big box store, the derby kids rallied and protested for days.Little did the kids know, that the home they just helped save, would essentially kick them out. Beidler is a proud "Derby Mom" of three fierce girls: "Cheshire Splat," "Hot Sauce," and "Zoom Zoom Kaboom." But now, she doesn't know if she will keep that title. "We don't know if we are going to be able to continue with derby," Beidler said. Days after the city council vote to save their rink, Beidler says her girls were suddenly told that their Youth Derby program would be cut. Management explained it was due to administrative reasons. "The way it went down it was just heartbreaking," Beidler said. The kids were told to join another club instead."We haven't been able to give that derby team the attention it kind of deserves," Brett Stang said. "They've been bumped for private events and other slots, so there is another team out there, 'Derby United,' who offered to take our program under their wing."But Beidler says the problem is that Derby United's new facility in La Mesa has not started construction. She also says Skateworld's prices cannot be beaten. "If we were to continue that and do derby at this new location that hasn't been built yet, then it would cost my family an additional 0 a month," Beidler said. Her girls are now so distraught, they cannot even speak. After all they did for Skateworld, they feel unappreciated. "Having our kids getting excited and politically motivated and going on camera and speaking from the heart how it is family," Beidler said. "They feel very betrayed."Skateworld's management told 10News, although they are closed on Mondays, the kids could have Monday practices if parents and coaches work on an agreement. But hosting home games on the weekends would be tough, considering their free skate schedule. 2663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego’s newest ride is shut down for maintenance, according to Cal/OSHA.According to the agency, Tidal Twister was shut down June 1, roughly two weeks after its opening on May 24. The ride was shut down to address mechanical issues. Cal/OSHA says SeaWorld is working with the manufacturer to repair the ride. RELATED: SeaWorld unveils Tidal Twister thrill ride at San Diego parkOnce the ride is ready to reopen, an inspection will have to be done by Cal/OSHA to ensure it can be operated safely. The ride recently opened as SeaWorld works to complete more rides in the San Diego park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some schools are preparing for in-person learning and parents have mixed emotions.In July, ABC 10News interviewed the Batten, Campbell, and Chavez families. It has been quite a journey since then.“There’s so much uncertainty,” said parent Tancy Campbell.“We just don’t know what the future’s going to hold,” added Patrick Batten, whose three children are in the Poway Unified School District.Gina Chavez’s three children are in the Sweetwater Union High School District. The district was the first to start the school year in distance learning in early August. She originally described the first day as “crazy,” but said it has gotten better since then.“It’s been good. I have to say I think we’ve all kind of found our schedule,” Chavez said. However, she has dealt with what many parents can relate to—how to communicate the changes with the kids.“My daughter in particular, she really wants to go back because she is seeking that normalness of life before the pandemic. Every week, we’re having to talk to her,” Campbell said.Chula Vista parent Tancy Campbell goes back and forth on the best way to teach her two kids. In August, she wanted there to be a path to send her children back to in-person learning safely.Late Friday, the Chula Vista Elementary School District superintendent announced a plan to bring some preschool through second grade students back on campus. That news caught Campbell by surprise, as she was unaware of the change.“I don’t know to feel about that,” Campbell said. She is now leaning toward homeschooling permanently.“Each person [has] to do what’s best for their family and sometimes, it may not be going back,” Campbell said.Patrick Batten is looking forward to sending his kids back to in-person instruction. “Book learning is only part of going to school,” Batten said. He said his kids also looking for that social interaction.On October 1st, one of Patrick’s three children will be heading back to the classroom part-time. The Poway Unified School District announced a phase reopening plan for some elementary schools.“We’re happy to put him back, even if it’s only two and a half hours because at least he gets to be with his friends, see his teacher,” Batten said.His daughters though, will not be going back to school just yet. Batten said it is creating some tension in his household. In the meantime, he and his wife—who both work full-time—have enrolled their children in the Boys and Girls Club to help with distance learning. It is costing them hundreds of dollars a week.“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for us as the parents and the kids as well,” Batten said. 2642
