(AP) — California corrections officials say they arrested 110 sex offender parolees during an annual Halloween sweep designed to keep the offenders from contacting children or engaging in other Halloween activities.That's about 9 percent of the 1,252 parolees contacted statewide Wednesday.Officials said Thursday that eight parolees face new charges while the rest allegedly violated conditions of their parole.Thirty offenders were found with pornography, including two with child porn. (AP) — The California Assembly said Monday it denied a former lawmakers' appeal of an investigation that found he sexually harassed a lobbyist in 2016.Former Democratic Assemblyman Matt Dababneh had appealed the finding that he likely pushed the lobbyist into a bathroom at a Las Vegas party and masturbated in front of her while urging her to touch him. Lobbyist Pamela Lopez publicly made the accusation against Dababneh last December and submitted a complaint to the Assembly Rules Committee, which hired an outside investigator.The Assembly Rules Committee told Dababneh in a letter dated Friday that his appeal was reviewed and rejected.Dababneh denies harassing Lopez and is suing her for defamation. Representatives for Dababneh did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Lopez said she hopes the Assembly's rejection of Dababneh's appeal encourages other women to speak out about sexual harassment."This decision is an important step to uphold fairness, accountability, and equity in the workplace," she said in a statement.The lawyer hired by the Assembly to investigate the allegation interviewed more than 50 people and reviewed relevant documents, according to the letters released by the Assembly on Monday. (AP) — The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that inmates convicted of nonviolent sex crimes cannot be denied a chance at early parole consideration under a ballot measure approved by nearly two-thirds of voters four years ago. RICHMOND, Va. — Crews have arrived to remove a statue of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart from Richmond's Monument Avenue — an area of the city that contains several Confederate statues that Mayor Levar Stoney has promised to remove.The J.E.B. Stuart monument is one of about a dozen statues Stoney has ordered be removed from city property.Statues of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson and Confederate Naval Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury were removed from Monument Avenue last week and taken to an undisclosed location. A statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was toppled by protesters last month.A statue to Confederate General Robert E. Lee is located on state-owned property and could be removed once legal challenges to its removal make their way through court.The Stuart statue, erected in 1907, is the first monument Stoney promised would be removed following the holiday weekend.The mayor said it would cost .8 million to remove the statues. He said the money would come from the Department of Public Works and be reimbursed by a private fund.While city attorney Haskell Brown told Richmond City Council that Stoney did not have the power to remove statues, Stoney said he believed he is on sound legal ground to remove the statues using his emergency powers as the Emergency Management Director."That's in our Emergency Operations Plan.
