SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate.That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Friday about the controversial arrest of a man and woman in Chicano Park involving use of force. Georgina Mercado, 35, interfered with a traffic stop being conducted Thursday, police said. Her three children, ages eight, seven, and four, were with her at the time. 22-year-old Eddie Alvarez arrived on scene with another woman who said they would take custody of the three children, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Alvarez wore a bandana over his face and refused to identify himself, police said. Officers “could not release the children to the custody of Alvarez without knowing who he was,” said police. “This contact escalated to the point that officers arrested Alvarez for interfering,” Takeuchi wrote in a news release. Police said Alvarez refused to put his hands behind his back and struggled with officers. “Officers used strikes while they forcefully moved his arms behind his back,” police said. Alvarez was handcuffed and taken to jail. “Anytime force is used, we take it extremely seriously. We have initiated an internal investigation into the force that was used last night,” Takeuchi said. Hours after the arrest, dozens of people gathered outside the San Diego Central Jail downtown to demand Alvarez’ release. The group said Alvarez had been recording the arrest of Mercado, who they described as a community activist. One demonstrator said, “While he (Alvarez) was filming police, they came out and told him to stop recording. He said, ‘No, I don’t feel safe, I’m going to keep recording, especially with my girlfriend right here with the kids,’ and they didn’t like that … The cops ended up jumping him and rushed him to the ground and started punching him in the ribs. He wasn’t resisting whatsoever.” Alvarez is a member of the activist group Brown Berets of Aztlan, City News Service reported. He was booked on suspicion of felony obstructing or resisting an officer, and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer. He was being held on ,000 bail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience.She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. I know it’s being cleaned and I know what’s being touched,” McKesson said.Several other salon owners around San Diego County told ABC 10News they are leaning towards not reopening because of the rules, which puts them in an already tough financial situation as they try to keep their businesses alive. 2021
