Reduced to peddling fossils to wealthy tourists in order to support her ailing mother (Gemma Jones), Mary develops an exterior as hard and impenetrable as the bones and rocks she unearths.Mary grudgingly agrees to make some extra money by caring for Charlotte (Ronan), the ailing wife dumped off on her by one of her clients. At first, Mary sees Charlotte as a privileged nuisance who can't connect to her life of science and struggle, but they find common interests and angsts, causing the ice between them to slowly crack. They steal moments of intimacy amid their struggle-filled life, finding joy and passion neither imagined was waiting for them. Left unspoken -- but weighing heavily all along -- is the realization that the social values and customs of the time all but doom their prospects.Director Francis Lee ("God's Own Country") shows an eye for sweeping visuals and an ear for intimate moments. He's not as adept at infusing his story with much urgency, though. Many scenes unfold as lingering tone poems meant to set the scene and color the characters. The drawback is that the movie moves so slowly that it's easy to lose interest and drift away."Ammonite" is often as dull and opaque as its title, but worth watching for the two lead performances, as well as its intricately spun tale of a complicated friendship and love. A task that once took days has been reduced to hours, thanks to the use of drones and laser technology.The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is mapping the shoreline of San Diego's coast  to study beach and cliff erosion. The new technology, paid for by the California State Parks and the Army Corps of Enginners, has made that task much easier."This is allowing us to get a more comprehensive view of the beach and the cliffs," says lead researcher Adam Young.Young and his team will drive the entire coast from La Jolla to Oceanside twice a year. They're using a laser enhanced camera and a drone to create a 3D map of the coast. Over time, they'll be able to compare the maps and see where and how the beach is eroding."We're going to have to start looking to the future," Young says. "And we're not going to be able to prepare properly unless we collect data and understand what's happening now."In addition to the twice yearly studies, Young says they'll look at sand levels after storms and at how sand moves throughout the year.Young says it can help predict what areas of the cliffs are susceptible to collapse. 1139

A Milwaukee woman applied for a job only to be told by the company that they don't hire people with "ghetto" names.Quinntellia Fields says she received the email response on Monday after applying for a receptionist job at Mantality Health through a third-party site.Mantality Health has multiple locations in the Midwest. Fields said she was applying for a job at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location."First, I thought it was a joke," she said.The quick response looked legit, until she got to the line that said, "Unfortunately we do not consider candidates that have suggestive 'ghetto' names.""That’s pretty offensive," Fields said. "I was pretty shocked and then I was hurt."She contacted the company who told her the outside job board was hacked.In a statement posted on the company's website, Mantality says it's working with law enforcement and considering appropriate legal action."We share the anger and frustration of those who received these bogus emails," the company's statement read in part."Seems like the typical response," Fields said. "If someone’s in trouble on the internet, 'Oh it’s just a hack.'"Fields isn't the only job seeker who received this reply. A new lawsuit says a woman who tried on lipstick at a Sephora cosmetics store in Hollywood, California got herpes from the sample.The unidentified woman claims it happened at the store in October 2015, according to a report by TMZ. She ended up with herpes on her lip and says she never had it before the visit to the store.The documents say the store failed to clearly warn the woman of the risk of getting a disease from using samples of lipstick there.The lawsuit says the woman is suing over the emotional distress for getting an "incurable lifelong affliction." Sephora did not respond to the TMZ article, but a spokesperson for the retailer did respond to Fashionista, saying the health and safety of its customers is a priority.
