Ed King, who co-wrote the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit "Sweet Home Alabama," the tune with the classic riff that became a Southern rock anthem, has died.The retired guitarist died Wednesday at his home in Nashville, according to his Facebook page. The post did not include a cause of death or King's age.King was a member of the Florida band in its early days. He left before a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three members of the group and later rejoined for a reunion tour, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.King was one of three writers of "Sweet Home Alabama," which was released on the album "Second Helping" in April 1974, according to Rolling Stone. The rollicking track begins with King counting "1-2-3" before the guitar lick that generations have come to know as a tribute to the state of Alabama."When we were out in the country driving all the time, we would listen to the radio. Neil Young had 'Southern Man,' and it was kind of cutting the South down. And so Ronnie (Van Zant) just said, 'We need to show people how the real Alabama is,' " guitarist and founder member Gary Rossington told Garden & Gun in 2015."It wasn't cutting him down," Rossington said of Young. "It was cutting the song he wrote about the South down. Ronnie painted a picture everyone liked. Because no matter where you're from, sweet home Alabama or sweet home Florida or sweet home Arkansas, you can relate."The iconic song was born in a practice session.Rossington told Garden & Gun?he kept playing a riff over and over while they waited for everyone to arrive for rehearsal."Ronnie and I were sitting there, and he kept saying, 'play that again,' " Rossington said in the 2015 article. Who could've guessed that song would pay the rent for over 30 years?"The band was named after a Jacksonville, Florida, high school gym teacher who was their nemesis. The teacher's name was spelled differently, Rossington told CNN. The group, who liked the Beatles at the time and just wanted to be a band, often got in trouble in gym class because of their long hair, Rossington said.On Thursday, tributes poured in for King.Rossington tweeted: "Ed was our brother, and a great Songwriter and Guitar player. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - City leaders in El Cajon want to add harsher penalties to punish stores that sell tobacco products to underage customers.Current law says stores cannot sell tobacco or nicotine related products to anyone under the age of 21.Under El Cajon's current Tobacco Retail License statute, any store caught selling will face either a fine or a 30 days suspension of their license for the first offense.A second offense brings a 90-day suspension. The third offense bumps that up to a year. If a store is caught selling to underage customers four times in five years, their license gets revoked.But some city leaders feel that's not harsh enough."I think that they looked at the ,000 fine and said that's just the cost of doing business," says City Councilman Gary Kendrick. "I think it's greed. These stores are profiting from the future suffering of our children, and I am going to stop it."Kendrick wants to make the first offense a 90-day suspension and raise the fine. He also wants more enforcement.The move comes after 15 stores got citations during enforcement stings during the spring. That's a big spike from previous years where as few as one store was cited.Of the 15 stores cited, eight are filing appeals. Six paid the fine for the first offense, and one store took a 90-day suspension for a second offense."This is a huge problem," says Kendrick.But store owners say more punitive penalties are not the solution."Is that going to solve the problem? I don't think so," says Isam Habib who owns the Ranch Liquor store on Washington Avenue."What can you do? When you have to hire employees in and out, and they're young, you train them, you teach them, and they make a mistake," he says.Habib says store owners don't think they should lose a large chunk of their business for one mistake."We just gotta check the IDs," he says. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A news helicopter had what County of San Diego officials called a “troubled” landing in El Cajon Tuesday. The incident with the Bell 206B helicopter was reported about 2:15 p.m. in the parking area of Gillespie Field at 681 Kenney St., Santee Fire reported. Video recorded by the news helicopter appears that it was a normal landing in which the helicopter skids land on a movable platform called a dolly. The dolly can then be pulled into a hangar. It seems from the last seconds of the video clip that one of the helicopter skids may have missed the platform and the chopper then tipped over.When emergency crews arrived, the helicopter was on its side.The pilot was not hurt but the passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said. Hazardous Materials teams were notified of a small fire and fuel spill, according to the County."The aircraft rolled over while landing, caught fire and sustained substantial damage. The degree of damage means this will be classified as an accident," said FAA spokesperson Ian McGregor.The FAA and NTSB will investigate the landing.The news helicopter is operated by a third party and shared by five San Diego media outlets, including 10News. 1235
