SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland.Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. In the video, a man is seen walking up to the door, grabbing the big package and a smaller one. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times.He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland.She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland.The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After weeks of large crowds, no masks or social distancing in Ocean Beach, the City of San Diego put together a compliance team to educate people about the county’s public health order.A team of about 12 people consisting of code compliance, parking enforcement, and park rangers handed out face masks to those who didn’t have them on and asked for compliance.“There was unacceptable levels of people coming together, congregating together getting really, really close without masks or social distancing,” said Joel Day, the senior advisor for COVID Response and Recovery with the City of San Diego. “We’re asking people don’t congregate here, please wear a mask if you’re around other people, and please socially distance and so far it’s looking pretty great.”Within one hour, Day said the team handed out about 300 masks.Earlier in the day, residents noted that Veterans Plaza in Ocean Beach appeared to be less crowded. But as the sun went down, the drum circle returned, and so did the crowds. They cleared out by about 10:30 PM.Resident Tim Johnson said home and business owners have had to deal with the same scene repeatedly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A staph infection led to the amputation of a 3-year-old boy's legs weeks after his family arrived in San Diego for a vacation.The Baumkirschners and some friends arrived in their RVs from Arizona in early October and immediately set up camp along Mission Bay.3-year-old Beauden and his two older sisters were part of a group that went for a ride on their bikes."He fell off his bike and scratched his knee. We put on antibacterial spray with a band-aid, and off we went," said his father Brian Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says Beauden spent the next few hours riding bikes, running around, and at one point, playing in the dirt. Early in the evening, Beauden told him he wasn't feeling well."He said, 'My tummy hurts. Is it bedtime?'" said Baumkirschner.The next morning, Beauden woke up with a fever and eventually started favoring his right leg, where he had a scrape just under his knee. When he became lethargic the next day, his parents rushed him to urgent care, and then Rady Children's Hospital. Brian says his son's right knee was swelling up and turned purple."It started spreading up, his legs, down his leg, in his arms, and down to this hands," said Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says doctors eventually diagnosed Beauden with a MSSA staph infection. Another type of staph infection, MRSA, is more associated with bacteria in the bloodstream."They kept telling us that there was swelling. All of his extremities are shutting down," said Baumkirschner.Beauden had developed a complication: toxic shock syndrome. His little body started to shut down. Beauden developed sepsis. His kidneys started to fail."It's been every parent’s worst nightmare. You can’t do anything. You’re helpless," said Baumkirschner.There were several leg surgeries to relieve the pressure. Baumkirschner says there were some harrowing days, but his son pulled through. On Monday, doctors had to amputate his legs below the knee.Baumkirschner says he's just grateful is son is alive. He's optimistic Beauden's arms and hands can be saved.Baumkirschner says doctors at Rady Children's Hospital told him similar serious staph infections are rare, and they only a see a few cases every year.Doctors also couldn't pinpoint exactly when or where Beauden contracted the staph bacteria.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family with expenses. 2365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An arson investigation expert says the probe into possible arson behind the USS Bonhomme Richard fire could take more than a year to complete.Wednesday multiple sources with close ties to NCIS told ABC 10News that a sailor is being investigated for arson in the Navy ship fire at Naval Base San Diego last month.Timothy Wilhelm is a senior fire investigator with Robson Forensic and has extensive experience with arson cases. He’s not part of the Navy ship investigation but says it could take agents more than a year to complete their findings. “There's so many delicate systems in that ship.
