SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New census data shows that less than a third of San Diegans have their mortgages paid off.Of the more than 228,000 houses located in the city, 60,402 housing units have no mortgage.The numbers were released following a five-year study by the Census Bureau. The study was conducted between 2012 and 2016.Of the cities and neighborhoods with more than 1,000 homes, Harbison Canyon took the top spot for most homes without a mortgage at 41 percent followed by Bostonia also at 41 percent and Coronado at 39 percent. As far as cities and neighborhoods with the least amount of homes without mortgages, San Diego County Estates takes first place at 13 percent followed by Poway at 20 percent and Rancho San Diego at 20 percent. For those trying to buy a home, the county does offer programs to help with down payments and closing costs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People with gardens and groves in their back yard are helping others through the coronavirus pandemic, by donating their extra fruits and veggies."Especially in these times where we're just looking for good stories and good things to do, that was in my heart to encourage other people," says Terri Healy. She donated six full boxes worth of fruit from her backyard trees.Healy was inspired by a message from her Pastor at the Rock Church. So she took the fruit to a nearby nursery, and posted a sign that said "Free Organic Fruit." It was gone within a couple of days."The employees there said that the customers were just so excited to receive it," says Healy. "We're thrilled that it was used in the community."Community is a big deal to KK Kvernland. She helps run the Second Chance Youth Garden. It gives at-risk teens hands-on training in a garden, as well as mentoring. Kvernland had to cancel the classes during the pandemic and was looking for something to do with all the vegetables they grew."We usually run a delivery box service, sell at fruit stands, to restaurants, and the kids all take home food each week," she explains. "Now, we're putting our heads together, and we really want to get food to the most vulnerable people in our community, including our participants and their families." They're also asking for help, as they're missing out on the revenue they get from sales. "We're asking people to come and donate to our website so that we're able to cover the costs to provide people food to the people that needed the most," says Kvernland.For both Healy and Kvernland, and countless other people who have been giving away the fruits and veggies they grow at home, this is all about coming together during a crisis."It's just a good reminder that it's important to have community resilience," says Kvernland. "And it's important to make sure that services are accessible for all types of people.""We're trying to encourage others," says Healy. "What can you do with your farm or your ranch? Is there anything on your farms that you can use to help spread the food supply to people in your community? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot during a road rage incident in Del Cerro early Sunday morning.According to police, the shooting happened on the 5200 block of Adobe Falls Road at 1 a.m. Sunday.Police say the 57-year-old victim was crossing the street to meet a friend when he was nearly struck by a white, four-door sedan.RELATED: Man continues watching UFC fight after stabbing friend in the Midway DistrictThe victim “exchanged words” with the driver of the vehicle before the man got out of the car and the two fought.The victim was knocked unconscious before a passerby took him to the hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Petco Park in downtown San Diego is being transformed into a destination for those looking for family-friendly Halloween fun.From Oct. 23-Nov. 1, the San Diego Padres are hosting The Halloween Trail at Petco Park – an event described as “a socially distanced one-way Halloween-themed trail and pumpkin patch in Gallagher Square where guests will have the opportunity to visit various themed booths, collect candy and toys and partake in the spooky festivities.”As guests journey on the decorated Halloween Trail, booths will be in place to offer treats “via contactless delivery.”After completing the trail, guests can enjoy their candy or purchased food/drinks while watching a Halloween move in the park -- all while socially distanced.Adults 21 and over will have their own special Halloween experience: “The Halloween Trail at Petco Park Movie Night, a special outdoor movie experience for adults 21 and up complete with Halloween snacks and a Halloween-favorite movie. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More people left California than those who moved in last year, according to recent Census data.The data shows that about 691,000 people left California for other pastures around the U.S., while only about 501,000 people moved into the Golden State in 2018.So where did everyone go? The data says most former Californians end up in Texas (86,164), Arizona (68,516), Washington (55,467), or Nevada (50,707).RELATED: San Diego homeowners creating rentals by converting garages into apartmentsPerhaps it's not all that surprising. Year-over-year, Texas added more jobs than any other state. The state added 283,000 jobs and unemployment fell to 3.7 percent in April, according to The Dallas Morning News. California, with 10 million more people than Texas, added 271,600 jobs year-over-year.With Arizona, a recent campaign to court Californians may have attracted new residents. The Greater Phoenix Economic Council's "#CAStruggles" campaign has tried attracting Californians to the desert with the promise of a lower housing cost, taxes, and other financial benefits. A recent UC Berkeley poll found that at least half of California's voters have given either serious (24%) or some (28%) thought to moving.
