Once a week, Karelia Lanuza comes by Viola Zilio's apartment to help her with whatever she might need, whether it’s finishing a puzzle, helping with chores or reminding her to take her medications. The two will often run errands or go for walks. Often times, they’ll even stop at Zilio’s favorite café to get the traditional Cuban coffee. Lanuza isn’t a traditional caregiver. She more of a companion, according to Zilio. The pair met when Lanuza signed up to work for Papa, a new app and phone-based service for seniors. "Papa connects college students to older adults for companionship, assistance, and transportation,” says CEO and founder Andrew Parker. “It’s kind of like a grandkid on-demand." Parker thought pairing college students with seniors could fill a void he saw. “My grandfather, who we call papa, needed help but wasn't really ready for traditional healthcare services, and I thought it was weird there was nothing available before that,” Parker says. “So, I thought it would be interesting to connect him to college student, and he loved it.” Lanuza is a sophomore pre-med student, and she needed a job that fit with her busy class schedule. She passed the company's background and personality checks and got the gig. “I came over. I met Viola and we clicked instantly,” Lanuza says. “And from there, I’ve been coming every Tuesday to see her, and we hang out. FORT DODGE, Iowa — A Colorado man is facing charges of assault for throwing water on Rep. Steve King, a controversial Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa. Rep. King was having a group lunch at the Mineral City Mill and Grill restaurant in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Friday when he was approached by a man who inquired about his identity. According to a spokesperson from the Fort Dodge Police Department, after learning the man at the table was King, the suspect then threw a glass on water on King. It's unclear if the man said anything to the U.S. representative when the alleged assault took place. The release states others at the table with King were also splashed and police were called. “Based on witness information, it is believed Mr. King was specifically targeted due to his position as a United States Representative,” a spokesperson for the police department said in the release. The suspect was identified as Blake Gibbins 26, of Lafayette, and was charged two counts of simple assault and one count of disorderly conduct. CHICAGO – This past May, Harrisburg University won ESPN’s inaugural College Esports Championship. In 2018, the college became the first to award full-ride scholarships to its entire 16-player roster. With gaming programs expanding and an estimated million in esport scholarships up for grabs, elite players are finding themselves in high demand. Just ask 16-year-old Elgin, Illinois high school junior Jonathan Huffman. He’s been playing online since he was 13 and regularly spends hours at his bedroom gaming station. When asked how good a player he really is, Huffman wryly responds. “Very good. I don’t really say it too much but I’m one of the best in the world I would think,” he said. In fact, Huffman is so good he needs a live camera trained on his hands during gameplay streaming to prove to others he’s not hacking the system. “Whenever people accuse me, they just look at the hand-cam and it kind of fixes the issue,” he said. An underemployed worker is defined as someone whose skill set is not being used at their job. Experts say what often happens is veterans will start receiving letters or emails saying a job has been filled. So veterans will likely turn to other positions where they can get hired but may not use their skills. “We believe that employers have kind of unintentionally created programs that have really created the path of least resistance for the veteran community, so it’s pipelined them into particular industries or certain roles, which has sort of limited the aperture of what's available and what's possible,” says Sara Roberts, the head of military and veteran programs at LinkedIn. Experts at LinkedIn say it's important for veterans to research the industry when they begin to look at civilian jobs to understand the type of jobs that are out there.
