DENVER – Time Magazine has named its first-ever "Kid of the Year" — 15-year-old Gitanjali Rao from Colorado.Gitanjali, who lives in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree, was chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 nominees for her "exceptional leadership" in finding solutions to societal problems such as cyberbullying and water contamination, according to a brief description of the selection process from Time."It was exciting. All my friends are really excited; they've been freaking out about it all day, as have I — as I should — and it's just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience," Gitanjali said over a Zoom call Thursday.Gitanjali said she was given the news of her most recent accomplishment by Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador Angelia Jolie. She called the experience "surreal" and not something she would have ever imagined. And while she may be the first-ever Kid of the Year, it isn't the first accomplishment for the bright teenager. In 2018, when Gitanjali was 12 years old, she spoke with Scripps station KMGH in Denver after she was named America's Top Young Scientist for creating Thetys, a device that detects lead in water — an invention inspired by the water crisis in Flint, Mich."I think there's so much we can do with technology; we just have to apply it in the right way, and that's really what I wanted to start doing," Gitanjali said Thursday when asked about her motivation for helping others. "The whole situation (of the 2019 shooting at STEM School Highland Ranch in Colorado), if anything, it motivated me to keep doing more — and not just more in terms of using technology, doing more in terms of helping people and just growing as a person."Her message for those wanting to change the world?"I think, if you start with a question of what you're passionate about and what you like, everything will fall into place…if anybody wants to change the world, for those of you watching who want to make a positive impact, just start with what you're passionate about and then dive deep," Gitanjali said.Time's Kid of the Year broadcast special will air Friday at 5:30 p.m. MT on Nickelodeon. This story was originally published by óscar Contreras on KMGH in Denver. 2222

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado police officer will not face charges for fatally shooting a homeowner who had just killed an intruder inside his suburban Denver home, prosecutors said in a letter released Monday.Adams County District Attorney Dave Young described Richard "Gary" Black's death as a "harrowing tragedy" but said his role was to determine whether the Aurora Police officer who shot the 73-year-old Vietnam War veteran was justified in using deadly force.Based on witness interviews and more than 90 videos captured by officers' body cameras, Young said Officer Drew Limbaugh did not know who Black was and fired when the homeowner refused police commands to drop his handgun.Young said Limbaugh's belief was reasonable and prosecutors cannot prove that the officer was not justified in firing. He said there also is no evidence that Limbaugh was reckless or criminally negligent."Officer Limbaugh engaged in conduct that was consciously focused on minimizing the risk to public safety," Young wrote. At the time of the shooting, Young said police did not know that Black had woken after midnight to investigate banging sounds and soon heard his 11-year-old grandson screaming as an intruder attacked him inside the bathroom. Police also did not know that the intruder, later identified as Dajon Harper, was lying on the bathroom floor after being shot twice by Black, he said."The evaluation of Officer Limbaugh's reasonable belief must be based not upon what we now know, but the circumstances as he perceived them at the time: hearing gunshots and then seeing an armed man emerge from a back room who refused commands to drop the weapon," Young wrote. The witnesses and police officers interviewed by investigators paint a chaotic scene. Young said police arriving at the home in Aurora around 1:30 a.m. on July 30 had little information and no description of a suspect.Within seconds, he said police heard gunshots inside the house and saw Black come into the hallway holding a handgun in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Young said the body camera footage shows police repeatedly told Black to drop his weapon before he came toward officers, raising the flashlight, and Limbaugh fired three times.Police have said Black had hearing impairment due to his military service. Young wrote that Black may not have heard the commands or recognized the officers as police but said that does not change Limbaugh's "reasonable belief that Mr. Black presented a threat."Witnesses told police that Harper was at a party at a family member's home nearby and may have been using drugs. Early that morning, he ran away and apparently broke down the Black family's front door.Black's grandson told police he woke up after feeling a cold breeze. He described walking toward his father's bedroom but then seeing a stranger showering as he passed the open bathroom door. The boy said the man grabbed him, locked the bathroom door and was strangling him before his father and grandfather were able to get inside the room.Harper, who was 26, died after being shot twice in the chest by Black. An autopsy report found levels of marijuana and methamphetamine in his blood. 3172

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreens says it’s partnering with a primary care company to open full-service doctor's offices at hundreds of its drugstores. The pharmacy chain announced Wednesday that an expanded partnership with VillageMD will allow them to open 500 to 700 “Village Medical at Walgreens” primary care clinics in more than 30 markets in the next five years. They intend to build hundreds more after that. Most of the clinics will be approximately 3,300 square feet each, with some as large as 9,000 square feet. Walgreens says they will optimize existing space in stores, which will also still provide a range of retail products to customers.Walgreens says the clinics will integrate the pharmacist as a critical member of VillageMD’s multi-disciplinary team to deliver quality health care to patients. The clinics will also be staffed by more than 3,600 primary care providers, who will be recruited by VillageMD.The clinics will accept a wide range of health insurance options and offer comprehensive primary care across a broad range of physician services, according to Walgreens. To help those who struggle to find health care providers, the company says more than 50% of clinics will be located in medically underserved areas designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.“These clinics at our conveniently located stores are a significant step forward in creating the pharmacy of the future, meeting many essential health needs all under one roof as well as through other channels,” said Stefano Pessina, executive vice chairman and CEO, Walgreens Boots Alliance.“In the U.S., we spend trillion per year on health care, over 85% of that is tied to patients with chronic diseases. To improve our health care system and reverse the trajectory of health spending, we must meet the needs of all patients. This partnership allows us to unleash the power of primary care doctors and pharmacists, enabling them to work in a coordinated way to enhance the patient experience,” said Tim Barry, chairman and CEO, VillageMD. “The results of our initial pilot clinics highlight that these outcomes are infinitely achievable.” 2150

Details are still emerging about the future online presence of Toys R Us and Babies R Us, as the company continues the bankruptcy process in court. The company says gift cards and store credit must be used in the next 30 days. One of the biggest questions that remains is the future of gift registries and baby registries. Those will stay up for a few more weeks, but possibly not much longer.New and expecting mothers in the Tampa Bay Area are fearing the impact."Babies R Us usually has everything for babies," says Aidelis Rubiani. "So it's a little scary," she adds, seeing the rows of empty shelves at the store on West Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa. The sign on the store announces that there are just 11 days until the store is closed for good. Rubiani registered with Babies R Us for her first daughter, but now, expecting a second child soon, she doesn't yet know where she'll turn."I was going to do Babies R Us but then they close," Rubiani said. "Now I have to go all the way to Brandon to go to Buy Buy Baby which is a completely different store."Buy Buy Baby, which is owned by Bed Bath & Beyond, has four stores in Central Florida, but only one in the Tampa Bay Area, in Brandon.Rubiani and other new and expecting moms say the impact will go well beyond baby gift registries. Some believe online shopping, like Amazon.com, won't be a suitable replacement for filling daily needs. And they add that stores like Walmart and Target don't currently have the wide selection Babies R Us has."It's not always easier because you don't know what you're going to get until you get it," says Rubiani."What if it's messed up and you have to send it back, and what if you need it right away?" 1751
