PALM HARBOR, Fla. — While doctors, first responders and local health departments are asking people to not gather in large groups for the Thanksgiving holiday, there are still many families who say they're planning to get together regardless. After major holidays, doctors have typically seen spikes in COVID-19 numbers.Doctors are sharing what to do if you learn someone in your group has symptoms of COVID-19 or tests positive for the virus.First, assess if you yourself have symptoms of COVID-19. These include cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe headaches and body aches. If you do, medical workers say go get a test right away. But if you don't have symptoms, but believe you may have been exposed, doctors say you and your immediate family will need to self-quarantine. Then, wait about five days to get tested."The reason for doing that is that you will probably get a false negative test if you do the test, and the first one or two or three, four days, since the exposure because there's not enough viral load in your nose," said Dr. Lara Cavanaugh with Children's Medical Center in Palm Harbor.?Something else important to keep in mind is just because you get a negative test result after five days does not mean you are necessarily in the clear.Doctors say you can still become positive for the virus and they say you should continue to quarantine for a full 14 days after exposure. Trying to avoid the grocery store these days?If you order through Instacart, you can have your groceries delivered right to your door from dozens of different supermarkets. However, some customers claim the people grabbing those groceries for you may be helping themselves as well.Terri Angel loves the convenience of Instacart grocery delivery from stores,, but she is getting concerned with mysterious charges that keep showing up on her bill."The other day, after I went back and reviewed the receipt, there was a pack of cigarettes on it," she said.Someone had billed her an extra ."It was a very expensive pack of cigarettes, a brand I haven't heard of, purchased and put on our list," she said. "So it was on our receipt and we did pay for it."Another day, she was billed for Red Bull energy drink."Just recently, on the 8th, a Red Bull was added at the end of the shopping cart," she said. "I guess they were thirsty and needed energy and decided to add on a Red Bull."She wonders how many others she's missed.Angel is executive director of a collection of group homes for the disabled, and orders groceries for them several times a week. It's those disabled clients, she says, who are being ripped off.Complaints increase as orders surgeA recent report in USA Today claims a growing number of customers accuse Instacart shoppers of stealing their groceries.Instacart's Facebook page has a number of complaints of similar mystery charges. It was pretty much inevitable that during a pandemic, with so many shoppers now ordering online and so many more people having to be hired to fulfill those orders, that we would see an increase in complaints.Instacart says orders have surged 300% this year, and it has hired tens of thousands of new shoppers to handle the load.It says each are thoroughly checked out before being hired, but says occasional errors and problems do happen. But It notes that "in these rare instances ... customers should contact Instacart care to have their order refunded."Terri Angel has one other piece of advice: Go over your receipt every time."Absolutely," she said. "Check your bill. Make sure you are checking every item on that receipt and that you received it."Instacart is an independent company, and is not owned by your local grocery store.Instacart, meantime, told us customers should reach out with any order or delivery problems (full statement below), so you don't waste your money.Full Instacart Statement"We’re seeing the highest customer demand in Instacart history and have more active shoppers on our platform today than ever before picking and delivering groceries for millions of consumers. An 80-year-old Colorado woman received a surprise welcome home parade Monday after battling COVID-19 for months.Virginia Herrera was diagnosed in April and since then she's been hospitalized twice, spending time at a rehab facility."Every day I was trying to wake up and do everything they wanted me to do. It took a lot of effort, but I did it," Virginia Herrera said. The cancer survivor came down with bilateral pneumonia while battling COVID-19. Doctors had to put her in a medically induced coma for 20 days. She also had to undergo a tracheotomy after using a ventilator to help with her breathing."Oh my gosh, I've been going through ventilators, and a trec. A lot of medication and treatments," Virginia Herrera said. Before she was diagnosed with the virus, she worked as a Nutritional Manager for Fremont County Head Start for more than 50 years. A job that her family says brought her joy. Dozens of her coworkers filled a Fremont County Head Start bus to participate in the welcome home parade. Neighbors stood on the street corners in support."We feel it's a miracle that Virginia has lived through this, 97 days and 60 something days on a ventilator," said Rick Archuletta, a neighbor. "We were praying for her, hoping she would come through OK and Gloria, her daughter, has kept us up to date on Facebook."While she was in the hospital, her family was unable to visit her. They say God and the power of prayer got them through this difficult time."Our grandma is a woman of God and that is the main reason that got all of our family through this. Prayer and God, it was a true miracle," said Andrea Herrera, Virginia's granddaughter. "This is grandma's house, it's where we all come by to have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. To us, it's our house as much as it is grandma's," said Dionisio Herrera, Virginia's grandson. "She always has the door open for us, always gives us a full belly to eat. We just love our grandma, all of us do."While she's happy to be surrounded by friends and family, she has a special message for those in the community. "Wear a mask and be careful," she said. New research shows suicide rates among teens are going up and are now at their highest levels since 2000. Now, pop star Lady Gaga is now taking steps to try and save lives in schools across the country. At Freedom High School in northern Virginia, students Katie Ramboyong and Jake Beyer spent part of their school year keeping an eye on other students, looking for any signs one of their classmates might be in trouble. “You never know when there's another kid struggling that we could help out,” says Beyer. About 550 10th-grade students at the high school spent a week in training to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues among their classmates. “Withdrawing from school, not talking to friends, just not being yourself as much,” Ramboyong says of the signs. Students then alert teachers or staff about any red flags. Ramboyong ended up using her training to help a student who told her on social media that he wanted to kill himself. “I found out that he had tried to kill himself already and he was not in a good place,” she recalls. “The next day, I went in and I talked to both of our teachers that we had, and I told her that he was not okay and that it was serious and he needed help right away.” At Freedom High School, the training helped identify nine students who ended up going through suicide screenings because of behavior concerns. Kenneth Christopher, the school’s director of school counseling, says they received the names of the students because of the program.“One hundred percent it's working, and it is helping and our students are making a difference because they're speaking up, they're telling a trusted adult, they're linking up the student with someone here at the school that could possibly give them outside resources to help them and possibly save some lives,” Christopher says. The program is part of an initiative with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. “My dream is that this happens in every school,” the singer says of the initiative. Eight schools took part of the pilot program, which will expand to 20 more schools this fall. 2113
