ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.

S.-China relations."Sometimes the tank is full, (and) sometimes it draws down. When it draws down like what happened early this year, the relations become sort of rocky," said Huntsman, who was invited by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as one of its 150th anniversary speakers.Huntsman, who became U.S. Ambassador to China in August last year, gave five observations on the U.S.-China relations.Firstly, the mandarin-speaking U.S. diplomat said there were a lot less dramas in the U.S.-China relations than many people might imagine despite the occasional alarmist headlines."If you view the U.S.-China relations with a distance, you get the sense that the wheel is coming off the bus. But when in the middle of the relations, you would get less drama," he said."There is more respect ... (and) the ability to communicate on the very very sensitive issues. I don't have a panic button, no restart button. The relations have ups and downs, but overall relations are strong, stable and resilient," Huntsman said.Secondly, he said there are areas of difference but there are many more areas of convergence and what unites us is a lot more important than what divides the U.S. and China."Our success is increasingly tied to identifying our shared interests and to working towards practical solutions," said the 50- year-old diplomat.Thirdly, Huntsman said the two nations were not seeking to " impose our world views on one another" or "to remake one another."The U.S. and China would seek to understand each other better, to continue dialogues and to improve future prospects, he said.Fourthly, Huntsman said while hot political issues often grab public attention, the foundation of the U.S.-China relations was largely commerce and trade.Back in 1974 and 1975, two-way annual trade between the U.S. and China was somewhere between 500 million U.S. dollars to 1 billion U.S. dollars, but this year the U.S.-China trade would reach 400 billion U.S. dollars, making it the world's largest commercial relations, according to Huntsman.Even in the sensitive areas of imbalance, it began to narrow, he said. QINGDAO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The spread of green algae has quickened as the temperature rises in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province.The area covered by green algae surged by 60 sq. km on Tuesday to 460 sq. km, according to the latest monitoring figure by the North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration released Wednesday.The surge is three times as fast as the average increase over the past four days, which was from 380 to 400 sq. km."It's getting hotter and hotter in Qingdao these days, and the green algae grows faster and faster," said Wang Zhigang, a local resident who swims in the sea every day.Sixteen to 20 degrees Celsius were the most favorable sea temperature range for growth of the algae, said Pang Shaojun, a researcher from the Institute of Oceanology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.The air temperature in Qingdao has risen by one degree Celsius per day on average over the past five days, reaching 27 degree Celsius Wednesday, according to the city's meteorological bureau."The sea temperature has risen to 20 degrees Celsius today, and the algae will keep growing if the temperature keeps rising," Pang said.The weather report said there would be a heavy rain in Qingdao, which would lower the air temperature to 25 degrees Celsius in the next three days, which meant the sea temperature would remain in the best range for the continued spreading of the green algae.Over 6,000 people, including cleaning workers and sea police, were deployed to clean the green algae as its continuing spread might affect the local fishery and tourism industries, said Ding Shugen from the Qingdao Committee of Municipal and Rural Construction.

BEIJING/YICHUN Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday started the official probe into the Yichun plane crash which killed 42 people and injured 54 others while domestic airlines were ordered to overhaul safety measures.The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has set up a special work group to probe the cause of the crash. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered a thorough investigation and beefed-up efforts to ensure air travel safety.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who led an investigation team to the lush forested city of Yichun overnight after the crash, headed the work group.Zhang called upon the work-group's first meeting Wednesday but details of the meeting were not made public.Li Jian, vice director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), told Xinhua that the work group has started to gather evidence for the probe, but the process would take some time.A Brazil-made ERJ-190 turbine jet of Henan Airlines crashed during the landing at the forests-surrounded Lindu Airport of Yichun City late Tuesday night, killing 42 and injuring 54 passengers and the crew on board.Fifteen severely injured, including children and a vice minister, were transferred to four key hospitals in Harbin, the provincial capital on Wednesday night.Initial probes and survivors' accounts indicate the plane missed the runway and crashed on the ground, cracking the cabin and triggering a mild explosion.No signs of sabotage have been found so far, investigators said.The black boxes of the jet have been retrieved.The Lindu airport of Yichun was closed down shortly while operations of the Henan Airlines were suspended.The board of directors of Henan Airlines on Wednesday sacked the airline's general manager Li Qiang and appointed an acting manager to replace him.Cao Bo, Li's replacement, served as the chief pilot of Shenzhen Airlines, the parent company of Henan Airliens.Major Chinese carriers, including the China Eastern and China Southern, on Wednesday called upon emergency meetings to review the companies' safety measures.
